I cut my teeth on the mean streets of academia, marching those hallowed halls in search of knowledge. On some front, University must remain a place that encourages intellectual dissent and debate. But it seems more and more that those are not sought after by these kids. They believe themselves on a righteous crusade, and I find it unfortunate that there are faculty whom would coddle and encourage this behavior. It is OK to protest and dissent, but if all they're doing is shouting down the opposition, then (as it said in the article) there is no movement for debate and only through debate can we really come to an understanding.
The professor was not wrong, but he also engaged a group of people who were reveling in ape-behavior. Taking over the library, shouting demands, but in the end very incoherent and no ability to control their movement or move forward to any form of solution. It's best to ignore these folk, and barricading themselves in the library and giving out demands...well I guess it's the decision of the "college", but that sort of behavior I find unacceptable in the student body. You cannot take over the public buildings, and you cannot close yourself off to intellectual discourse and debate.
But another part of me thinks that A) These kids have far too little homework, what the hell are they doing? B) University and College has become too inclusive. I believe that now that it is thought of as a necessity everyone goes, but no one really has a plan and now its treated as nothing more than some extension of high-school. Higher education is important, and I do think it should be available to all and affordable to all; but that doesn't make it a guarantee. It's academic scholarship and the pursuit of knowledge. You meet the high academic requirements or move along. You maintain those high academic requirements, or you move along. It's that simple.
