It's when you look at the totality of the history of Cold War that you recognize the general strategy of the U.S. and the West were justified. Neither the Soviets nor the Marxist Leninists they supported ever asked the populations of these countries what they wanted. It's within the context of the spread of Communist revolutions throughout the world that the U.S. and the West acted swiftly to defend Western and Modern civilization.
The U.S. was forced to support dictators and overthrow governments because Communists and Marxist-Leninists were using violence -- in real-time -- to overthrow Western-supported governments.
And this was a practical necessity as well because the U.S. and the West did not have unlimited resources. It was sometimes cheaper to overthrow governments and install dictators. And if we hadn't done so we may not have been able to beat the Communists. We would have run out of resources.
