A traveler who recently returned to the Houston area from El Salvador has a confirmed case of Zika, a virus borne by mosquitoes, health officials in Harris County, Texas, said on Tuesday.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control said it has confirmed 22 cases of the disease among returning U.S. travelers since it was first reported in 2007, and is still receiving specimens for testing from travelers who recently became ill.

There is no indication that mosquitoes in the continental United States are spreading Zika. But in December Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory, confirmed the first locally acquired case of Zika virus in a person who had not traveled outside the island.

The Zika virus has gained attention recently because Brazil is investigating a possible link between the infection and cases of infants born with microcephaly, abnormally small head size associated with incomplete brain development, the CDC said.

Harris County health officials said they were urging travelers to take protective measures against mosquitoes, such as netting and repellent, if they travel to areas where the infection is present.

Zika virus outbreaks have occurred in Africa, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, and have been reported in some countries in the Americas, the CDC said. It is transmitted by Aedes species mosquitoes, which also spread dengue and chikungunya viruses and are common in Texas, Florida and elsewhere in the United States.

Zika is usually a mild illness with fever, rash and joint pain. There is no preventive vaccine, according to the CDC.

So its causing serious birth defects in newborn babies. I thought I'd post this so people are aware.

One case about 1 person is causing serious birth defects? Surely, you had a meatier subject in mind when you posted this "Breaking News" that illness makes people sick.

I just hope it doesn't spread.

You probably said west Nile would never become a problem too right? Brilliant.

AIDS was originally one case, and look where it is now.

So illness doesn't make people sick? I'm not sure what your problem is. Your stated the case for why you made this story. You're apparently concerned by health. So? What exactly should we discuss? Well, we're not going to discuss the scientific aspect of it? I don't think you can. The historical aspect of it? Yes, it's a disease, it makes people sick, it also kills them. Scientists are working on it. Churches are praying about. Only one of those two is getting tangible results against horrible diseases. Not the kind of discussion you want to have.

So what then are we to discuss? The precautions we should all take for this? Republicans will often recommend praying. Scientists will recommend sensible measures like washing your hands. Watching what you eat and where you go. Don't take unnecessary risks. The Federal Government wil tell us basically what scientists say unless they're Republican. Republicans have proven themselves unable to do more than howl about how we should take into consideration the beliefs of people like the Duggars whose way of upbringing children apparently weren't enough to stop their son from sexually harassing his sisters. Politics is not the way you want to go down.

So what are we left with? Two meaningless question asked and answered by you. The person who has so far refused to set a discussion topic that they started. I'm willing to bet money your post will have something to do with the origins of this person. I'll even bet a few dollars you'll say a Republican is the solution to get rid of a certain specific and contradictorily vague group of people you don't like because their culture is not the same as yours.

Dana, I'm not questioning whether diseases can grow and kill millions. I'm asking the OP what part of this one particular case we should discuss. I'll bet you that "immigrants" will fit in there somewhere.

Good point, but it wasn't an immigrant that brought the virus to Houston. It was a returning tourist. LOL.

Good luck with all that slop.

See what I mean? Like clockwork. I ask you what we should debate, predict what you will want to debate and then you go quiet.

Yeah, you lost me with your Duggar diatribe. Started sounding wingnutty. I honestly don't understand why you take offense to this thread. There.

You seem lost since the beginning seeing as your OP didn't really say anything about anything. I asked you what we should debate, you've yet to state it. Here, I'll give you the floor:

What should we debate?

Silence please, the next statement will be a shocker. I am sure.

Well why don't you explain why you're so bothered with a story that might educate people about an illness that's out there? Do you want the CDC to stop publishing health alerts too?

- I ask you what we should discuss in a thread made by you
- After I called you out for your inability to bother defining why you made a thread about an foreigner who got sick and came to the US.
- You avoid question.
- You ask me to define what we should make in your thread.

That is this thread so far. Please, tell us what we should all do? Take precautions to not get sick? Okay. Done. So? What else is there to discuss?

You want the thread to go away or not exist yet you are the only one keeping it alive, lmao.

Okay, aside from you, I'm the only poster who has posted here. I obviously don't want thread to go away as I am contributing to it by responding to the OP; the one person who was interested in this breaking news that illnesses make people sick that he posted it on a debate forum. I have now pointed that your thread had nothing to discuss as per DP's BN rules, and you have done nothing to change that. I predicted that when you did define the part of the OP you wanted to discuss, it would probably involve immigrants. Somehow.

You had the opportunity to prove me wrong. You have yet to do so. Refusing to debate what part of your OP you'd like I to discuss, I can't help but feel like my predictions have hit some sort of nerve. I think you should really set the tone for the specific part of the news report you wish to discuss.

Oh, is that the Hermann Monument in your avatar?

Subtle.

I'll give you credit for spotting my avatar, that's impressive.

I posted the story because I thought it would be informative. If you think it violates DPs rules, I'm not really the one to complain to about that.

The Summer Games are to be held in Rio this year. Think that Zika might be a concern for folks traveling abroad? I think so. The more education that is available, the better.

Yes, you've informed us that there are illnesses in the world. People should take precautions. That's not breaking news nor political though. So let's have it.
