The volcanic ash that brought European air travel to a standstill forced the cancellation of President Barack Obama's weekend trip to attend the funeral of Polish President Lech Kaczynski. As understandable as Mr. Obama's inability to travel to Krakow was, his choice of alternative activity boggles the mind. Seeing the sudden opening in his schedule, he and three companions headed to the links for a round of golf.

This is just the latest in a growing list of missteps, inappropriate behavior and downright odd choices by a president who seems to not only lack basic social graces when it comes to our allies, he also seems to lack knowledgeable advisers to steer him away from such boorish behavior.

Starting with giving Queen Elizabeth II the ridiculous gift of an iPod (loaded with his own speeches) and unceremoniously returning the bust of Winston Churchill to England, Mr. Obama has repeatedly displayed the insensitivity of a narcissist. Most recently he treated Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu like an unwanted guest at the White House, ending a meeting with the words "let me know if there is anything new" and withdrawing to have dinner in private.

And now, he goes off to play 18 holes while the president of Poland and his wife, tragically killed in a plane crash, are laid to rest. Icelandic volcano ash aside, President Obama had plenty of more respectful alternatives:

He could have visited the Polish Embassy in Washington DC to sign a condolence book - something he has not done since the accident. (Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vice President Joe Biden have.)

He could have flown (volcanic ash-free) to his own hometown of Chicago where members of the large Polish-American community packed the Noble Square neighborhood Sunday as part of a procession leading up to a memorial mass to pay tribute to the Polish president.

He could have attended a church service in Washington DC to offer prayers for the Kaczynski family and the Polish people.

He could have simply remained quietly and respectfully at home with his family.

But no. Our president acted like a child who suddenly had a day off from school - he went out to play.

time is the most precious commodity
Obama is not wasting his
don't understand what is embarrassing about that
all i see is a another in a desperate series of pathetic attempts by those who did not vote for him to grab on to something - anything, actually - to try to deride Obama's efforts

I bet you were thinking of just how silly all those liberals were when they were complaining about Bush molesting the German Chancellors shoulders, right?

News flash, its obvious to everyone except those who are very partisan that you are feigning outrage over these non-issues. It makes you look petty. Just like the liberals who were complaining about Bush moving brush on his ranch.

Got anything to back this up?

Little 5 min MS paint job I just made.

the shoulder grab thing was kind of crap.

however, what should be brought up at this point in time is the double standard applied between Obama and Bush. Bush got excoriated for "golfing while soldiers were dying" and so forth; and it was played up that he didn't care about the nation - cause hey - he was off golfing.

Bush played 24 rounds of golf in the 8 years that he was president. In his one year, Obama has now played 32. I await the blasting from a lapdog media, but I think I'm not going to hold my breath...

Can you find me a single source, just one mind you, that comes from a source that claims to be non-partisan (not Olberman or an opinion piece, but an actual report from anywhere) that bashed bush for playing golf while we were at war? I found people bashing him for what he said on a golf course when told of a terrorist attack in Israel, but I haven't found anyone actually bashing him for playing golf. Prove me wrong.

Wow, OP is really scrambling for something to be mad about.

Unbelievable. What in the heck was he supposed to do? Sit in vigil the entire day?

Oh look. Gordon Brown was giving interviews regarding his performance at the debate held last week.

You actually keep track of that???

No, he doesn't keep track of it. He got it from the lapdog media that he loves to bash.

Don't expect any minds to be changed though, lol.

What a moronic thread to start. You really reached for an excuse here, my friend. Have you not been paying attention to what's happening over in Europe? This Iceland volcana has spewed ash all over the place. Air travel in Europe has nearly been ground to a halt! Small planes can barely get around and you want the President of the U.S. to fly Air Force One through that mess?

Unreal. :doh

Bush got in trouble for doing a flyby of New Orleans (sp) after Katrina rather then stopping

Obama, and most western politicians cancelled their planned attendance to the Polish funeral due to safety issues regarding flying through an ash cloud that could bring their plane down

No ash cloud prevented Bush from stopping for even a few hours in NO.

Slight difference dont you think

Carole,

Why don't you read this article concerning the devastation to European air traffic in the wake of the Icelandic volcanic erruption. Then maybe you might want to change your tone abit.

One volcano achieved what hurricanes, terrorists and flu viruses never managed -- Heathrow, Paris, Frankfurt, Schiphol and all of Europe's other major hubs came to a standstill on Friday afternoon. Airlines canceled 17,000 flights, while Frankfurt and Amsterdam airports set up thousands of camp beds. Losses for airlines are estimated at up to a billion dollars.

I just wonder what would you have had the man do? Sit around all day watching a video feed of the Polish president's funeral?

I find your opinions regarding President Obama to be extremely inflamatory, especially because you offer no support other than a biased partisan flame job. I find your remarks to be unamerican and unpatriotic.:(

People don't have anything better to do than count how many times Obama plays golf? Jeeeeeeez...talk about too much time on one's hands. :doh:rofl

Wait? Golf? If it wasn't in europe its not a gaffe like his gifts to the UK and other blunders....

I see no problem with him golfing. I wish he would take more vacations.

What difference does it make if he shows up to a Polish-American community for a photo-op or plays golf? Anti-Obama sentiment will regardless. If he took the former route, and visited Polish-Americans in Chicago, then people will say "look how that monster takes such a tragic accident and tries to get publicity points".

I think Obama took a fine course of action. Would you really want him to scavenge the lie that Obama has any care about the President of Poland?

I mean it sucks he dude died, and I had nightmares myself about dying in a Russian Jet, but when does it become the responsibility of the American President to play Dr. Sympathy?

..

You really don't see the difference? So sad.

Bush didn't get in trouble for flying over New Orleans instead of stopping by. Him and all the local Louisiana politicians (many of which were Democrats and did terrible jobs at the time) because they did a terrible job responding to that disaster and because he appointed a moron to head FEMA instead of someone who knew what they were doing.

Theres a huge difference in a gigantic national disaster that happened on american soil killing thousands of Americans and the death of another countries president.

My question still stands conservatives. If you really want to prove some huge liberal media conspiracy it should be easy as pie to find one source corroborating your little locked off fantasy worlds.
