Yemen's president open to dialogue with al-Qaida - Yahoo! News

SAN'A, Yemen – Yemen's president said he is ready to talk to al-Qaida members who renounce violence, suggesting he could show them the same kind of leniency he has granted militants in the past despite U.S. pressure to crack down on the terror group.

This is definitely not good news. If Yemen continues down this path, we may very well need to take military action ourselves. Then the question will be, would Obama have the backbone to take such action?

President Ali Abdullah Saleh's comments raised the possibility he could continue a policy that has frustrated U.S. officials in the past — releasing al-Qaida militants on promises they will not engage in terrorism again.

Several have since broken those promises and are believed to have returned to al-Qaida's ranks.

"Dialogue is the best way ... even with al-Qaida, if they set aside their weapons and return to reason," Saleh said in an interview with Abu Dhabi TV aired Saturday.

He said Yemen would pursue those who continued violence, but "we are ready to reach an understanding with anyone who renounces violence and terrorism."

Well no duh many have returned to al-Qaeda's ranks, they're freaking terrorists. What's to stop them from lying and saying that they're going to be a good boy, if it'll get them back in the action?

Even if Yemen applied some kind of "terrorize twice and you're dead" bit to anyone who did not stay un-terrorist, this would still be a bad idea, IMO.

In his country.

Al-Q is a franchise.

I Could call myself Al-Queda.

And if you did, you would belong in prison.

And how exactly would that effect Al-Quieda as a whole?
My point is that they may be addressing domestic terrorists that attached themselves to an easly recognizable name.

Taking military action in Yemen would be a bad move. Our military is too stretched as it is.

In this case the US provided intelligence. There are more than one ways to skin a cat.

That is a whole different kettle of fish. Yes, we should provide countries with intelligence that aids us. Military action is not a good idea until we are less engaged. Right now we have too many troops deployed, and it is hurting us. Long deployments do horrid things to morale.

Too late.....

On orders from President Barack Obama, the U.S. military launched cruise missiles early Thursday against two suspected al-Qaeda sites in Yemen, administration officials told ABC News in a report broadcast on ABC World News with Charles Gibson.

Isn't this the same thing that Bush took so much heat about?

Cruise missiles I can deal with. Let me be clearer(and the fault is all mine here): we should not deploy troops in Yemen.

Did Bush take heat for it? I don't remember the incident...what happened?

I was thinking the Predator missions.... and I agree, if you can do the job with tech, keep the boots on the home ground.

Will cruise missiles discourage the Yemen govt from talking al Qaeda?
