The New York Times front page headlines from today are:
  1. Rising From the Atlantic, Climate Alarm (link);
  2. Despair Sets In as Cases Bury Hospital Staffs (link); and
  3. Surging Demand For Virus Tests Swamps System (link)
Below is a screenshot of today's New York Times (December 18, 2021). The headlines one reads jolt one out of their sleep with the three scary front-page headlines, linked above. If you want the articles themselves and are paywalled, DM me your email address and I will try to send a copy of the text or PDF.

Only Headline #3 remotely qualifies as "news." What is certain is that all three are designed and calculated to engender panic. A more balanced article from the day before, headlined "Scientists Are Racing to Gauge the Threat of Omicron" (link), still a scary headline, contains the following salient quotes:

December 16 said:
Still uncertain is how serious the consequences will be, as much remains unknown about the variant, including how likely it is to cause severe disease.....Early evidence from South Africa has raised hopes that Omicron may be milder than Delta; in one small report, researchers there noted that patients in a hospital Covid ward were less likely to require supplemental oxygen than during previous surges, for instance.....And, she said, “even if infection is mild in many individuals, it’s not going to be mild in everyone.”
In fact, some news out of South Africa, where the variant apparently originated, indicates that the effect may not be much worse than the common cold. While certainly study is needed on an urgent basis, panic and hysteria are not needed. There are serious costs to lockdown.

What we are seeing is a modern-day example of the yellow journalism prevalent in the late 1890's, that is held responsible for the Spanish-American War. See What is Yellow Journalism? - Definition, History & Examples.

They got their marching orders from Biden's puppet masters.

1. Climate change is a crisis.
2. Covid is a crisis.
3. The economy is great.

The problem...Americans know the reality.

"Some" news? What news would that be? A link would help. It's your claim to prove. You've already stated that there is more than there is some.

The purpose is to sell newspapers, not to report the news. As they used to say, sex sales. Now it's sensationalism and fear mongering.

I see the headlines, I read the articles, I research for more. I get both views and I see holes in the climate predictions. Mostly the trouble arises with the modeling and information put in. A minor error and it's really messed up. They estimate the numbers for their own benefit. No climate catastrophe, no donations to fund their jobs.

Just remember Barrack Obama bought a home on the beach in Martha's Vineyard. If the Ocean is really rising and these coastal cities are going to be under water in a few years, would a man with all the information at his fingertips really do that? And John Kerry preaches carbon footprint then owns multiple mansions, flies around the world in a private jet, and brags about turning off his lights. Really. Of Al Gore, the climate whore. He's a multi millionaire. Worth 300 million his net worth when he left public office was only 1.7 mostly from family land and business holdings. Environmental alarm, sells.

For certain politicians and public figures, rules are always "for thee and not for me." They are for the hired help. Remember Whitmer's husband's use of his boat while Michigan was under lockdown, Purported request for boat launch fuels controversy for Whitmer? Or Pelosi used shuttered San Francisco hair salon for blow-out ? (link). Or Mayor Lori Lightfoot's hair styling in violation of her lockdown of Chicago, see Pelosi used shuttered San Francisco hair salon for blow-out. This is standard operating procedure.

It is no different for environmental issues. These people are not about to self-abnegate.

According to (did you forget "real"?) Americans, climate change and Covid-19 aren't crises?

The handling of these issues by the elites and its use to oppress common people is the crisis. Especially the likely extinguishment of the ICV in favor of mandatory EV's.

Don't forget save the whales. Or is that covered under climate change?

The elite are destroying Earth to oppress common people?

You think that burning fossil fuels in vehicles is important?

800,000 people have died from Covid-19. It’s okay to publish an article with a headline that alludes to its danger.

The study from South Africa had a small sample size and hasn’t been peer reviewed yet. Another study in the UK, also with a small sample size, indicated that Omicron was not less virulent. Furthermore, we could experience a situation where the virus could spread much faster than Delta, and be only slightly less virulent than Delta, but because it spreads faster than Delta it ends up killing far more than Delta. So, no, you’re wrong, we have reason to worry.

Peer review takes months if not years. And even on panicky WCBS 880 radio, there was a lengthy interview with a doctor from Northwell Health to the effect that the symptoms he is seeing are cold-like.

Peer review takes months if not years.

1. Peer review doesn't take years, for something like this. Stop exaggerating.

2. All I'm saying is that we have to take all these non-published, non-peer-reviewed studies with a grain of salt.

3. Because peer review takes months we should act as if the worst-case scenario is what will happen, plan accordingly, and if the virus is not as lethal then we can relax.

And even on panicky WCBS 880 radio, there was a lengthy interview with a doctor from Northwell Health to the effect that the symptoms he is seeing are cold-like.

I have no reason to doubt the doctor, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be cautious and thorough about how we approach analyzing the information.

Actually, the most immediate crisis is that I get my ass over to my ex-wife's house to help her get ready for our children's Christmas visit. I can't do anything about disease and climate. My vaccination won't stop Covid, and an EV won't stop climate change. That's the truth.

This is an interesting view…describing the fear mongering that seems to work on liberals….

The CONSERVATIVE approach is to be cautious about new information, and to minimize risk by pursuing a gradual, incremental approach to change.

I haven't suggested that individuals can solve humanity's massive problems. I think that there's a very slim chance that radically changing the ways we live might work. It's probably already too late. The likely reality is that humanity isn't able to help itself.

Too bad you feel doomed. I sure don't.

I don't feel doomed. I'm a senior citizen; I've lived and I will continue living, and I will keep trying to do what little I can in my life to help.

Do you have anything of substance to say regarding the degradation of Earth's ecosystems?

I'm a senior citizen as well.

I'm not overly concerned about the health of the planet. So no, I'm sure I have nothing that would support your apparent view, and I doubt you have anything that might interest me on that topic.

Where does it say that the study concluded "the effect may not be much worse than the common cold"? I already pointed out that the claim included there was more news "than there is some." You gave me some. Besides the limp "some" news, there is such weak terms as "apparently", "may not" and "much worse".

"The Omicron variant of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) is certainly not the same as the common cold. While the jury’s still out on how virulent the Omicron variant may be, this new variant is proving that it can hospitalize and kill people, which is not what the common cold commonly does."

Not only did you fail to prove the claim with evidence, the claim is refuted by evidence.

Even when you feign debate, you get creamed.
