Yes, the Russians during the Soviet era actually investigated Martians and they supposedly found corpses of them. It was an inspiration for the fourth Indiana Jones movie.

what a catch 22: the incident is hidden from the public, yet the evidence is destroyed because of the lack of public interest ... in something the public is prohibited an interest in
