[R.I.P.] Willie Mays

Maybe the greatest catch in the history of baseball. For people thinking, that's not a big deal, keep in mind, that's a small ball moving very fast. It's not a big football being thrown by a human arm; it's a small ball being hit with an exit velocity of well over 100 mph to a point on the field where he has to try to catch up to it. To do this over the shoulder is just still amazing all these years later.

Ernie Banks and Willie Mays were my childhood heroes. Gibson & Brock, of course they are top shelf. Willie Mays is the best player of all time IMO. RIP Say Hey Kid.

One of the greats.
The first and only ballplayer I ever idolized.
Where does the time go?
My first MLB game was at Candlestick in 1961 at 7-yoa after Dad got stationed at Travis. We were the transistor radio and post-Sputnik kids.

So we followed Willie when Dad got transferred to Scott across the river from St. Louis, then finally to the Joliet Arsenal SW of Chicago. The Sun-Times would coin a term like A-Mays-ing when Willie played the Cubs. Mays, Aaron, and Clemente in the same All-Star outfield.

I was at quite a Dodgers/Rockies game tonight in Denver when my smart phone got buzzed with the sad news. I’m happy I’ve been at these games this week in CO and then at KC on the way home.

Things are quite different than 53 years ago, with all credit card and smart phone for tickets, parking, and anything in the parks.

Bobby Witt Jr made a mini-Mays catch and throw a few days ago.

The most amazing part is that he turned right around and fired a bullet to infield to hold the runner.

I remember being crushed when SF lost to the Yankees in the 1962 World Series.
In my child's mind I thought Willie was invincible and would single-handedly vanquish the Yanks.
Great series though. I think SF lost the 7th game1-0.
Line shot by Willie McCovey, caught by Bobby Richardson to end the game.
I think I might still have one of those old transistor radios.

Times do change.
Mostly for the better.
