Oh, our means tested welfare state is horrible, I agree. It traps people into poverty and reduces the level of wealth in this country by disincentivizing work.

But this isn't really just a democrat invention, republicans have had their hand highly involved in the making of this mess and share just as much responsibility. I would argue that they actually share more of the responsibility since they are the ones who constantly complain about it, yet they only increase the problem and rarely have taken measures to reduce the problem. Didn't Bush have a few years when both houses of congress were controlled by republicans? Why didn't they replace the welfare state with a better option?

By the way, being a democrat, or liberal, doesn't neccesarally mean that one wants to promote the welfare state. Most liberals complain about freebee means tested welfare just about as much as most conservatives do, and most conservatives will quickly speak up and admit that they believe that we should have a safety net.

I frequently get accused of being a liberal, yet I am totally against means tested welfare of any type, and I am against any and all taxpayer funded subsidies for individuals or businesses.

I bet you thought Romney was going to win when the score was 33-3, and believe all they way till the end when California and Ohio came in. You probably went past that and said to yourself: "Romney can still win since Ohio is close to 50-50", failing to realize that even if he won Ohio he had to win every single other undecided battleground state. Of which, he was trailing in every single one. This is not the Hope and Change campaign, no in in their right mind argues that, but it's more than good enough to beat Romney handily.

Yes - I believe I listed both the Depression and World War II as the causes of the debt.

What do we have to show for the debt today? The lowest tax rate on the upper crust in the last sixty years. :roll: Lots of defenders of wealth here would proudly thump their chests at that 'benefit'.

We did win the cold war and brought an end to the Soviet Union with some of that debt that we took on.

Be more specific though. I wasnt being facetious. What insults do republicans routinely engage in that make woman and racial groups automatically discount them. What policies that benefit the wealthy dont also benefit wealthy women and racial groups such that a person who is black see these policies different than someone who is white? Assuming republicans were to be willing to do a 180 on any issue, what position could they adopt that would eliminate these wedge issues such that the debate became about the scope of govt, foreign policy, etc., and not what race or sex someone was.

The demorat ruse is that if you must actually work to pay for ANYTHING then "access" to it is somehow being denied to "the needy" so everything (food, clothing, shelter, medical care, birth control...) is really a right. Once everything becomes a "human right" then work is needed only for things not on the "needed" list (luxuries) and there is no shame in not working to secure luxuries. It is now a "basic human right" to "have access" to a cell phone and you can get one free (or a discount on your own) if you qualify for food stamps (now called EBT or SNAP). We have become a nation of suckers that actually believe that people will "naturally" value education and hard work even if they see many others "succeed" without either. USA, USA, USA...

Sure, but that doesn't really have to do with the religious right per se, and the role of religion in the republican platform.

I don't really care what people think and why, as long as they can't impose their will on me it becomes just becomes interesting aspects of our diverse landscape. It's when they have the legal authority under current interpretation to force their will on me, that's the issue I have. Democrats are the worst with this, but republicans do it too on social issues and on the military, and presumably when it benefits the big corporate players who have their ear via lobbyists.

Actually, they did. In all fairness, if you adjust the national debt to inflation and population, I was left with quite a bit of debt before I was born, and before I graduated college.

Of course a lot of that debt was spent on me. It was spent protecting my country so that I could live in a fairly free society not under the rule of totalatarinism or socialism or communism or the ruler of a foreign country. It was spent creating the infrastrure which I enjoy today. It was spent on my education. It's actually only fair that I now pay the interest on the money that was borrowed to benefit myself, and its quite fair to my children that when they become adults they pay the interest on money that was spent to create a great nation for them.

Also, part of the reason that maybe I wasn't born into quite as much debt as my grandchildren will be is because I'm not paying quite as much tax burden as my parents and grandparents did. If we really wanted to relieve future generations from debt, then we would all be asking for tax increases, not tax decreases, but no one wants to pay more in taxes, so our children and grandchildren will just have to live with paying interest on the debt that was created to give them such a high standard of living. It's all fair and it all comes out in the wash.

Is it your understanding that if taxes were raised the $16 trillion in debt would be paid off and the survivors from todays generation would have the opportunities you enjoyed?

In fact even todays graduates can't get work. How do you see that situation improving?
