A very great number of those mass shooters end up dead by police fire, so they cannot, of course, give any testimony, and those that live are not prone to sit down and give interviews about their acts. I may have speculation, but you have silliness, and you have not yet presented any reasoned thoughts as to why my speculation might be wrong. Why do YOU think that a potential mass murderer selects an AR-15? And please, not that silliness about it somehow being because of liberals talking about it. You are wandering all over the place with standard NRA talking points, but you still have not directly addressed the subject/question of the OP. And going all the way back to 1982 has no merit because the increased use of the AR-15 as a weapon of choice mostly occurred after the Republicans removed Clinton’s ban on them and thus opened them up to the mass killers in the early 2000s.

If they were knowledgeable about guns they would probably pick something more suitable to the task

Handgun is more concealable, has high capacity magazines and can be quickly reloaded.

A hunting rifle of a major caliber with a scope is a much more effective long range rifle than a 22 caliber AR.

A shotgun with an extended magazine tube is a devastating close range weapon.

I swear, you are getting downright Trumpian in the manner in which your posts go hither and yon without making any real sense. And there have indeed been a number of NRA types who have, over the past couple of weeks, stated that the AR-15 is “not” a good weapon for mass murder because there are more effective ones out there. To which I usually reply in a sarcastic manner that perhaps they should hold a seminar for potential mass murderers in order to educate them as to which weapons are most effective in that regard. Their comments are nonsensical, and I treat them as such. If you are not keeping up with the conversations, you are welcome to go back and find them.
