Why Legalizing Marijuana Makes Sense

Legalizing Marijuana makes sense because individual liberty makes sense.

Exactly, since when has probation worked? It failed for Alcohol so are we suppose to believe that its going to start working now?

Since Nixon started a War on Drugs, Ive been asking what is the goal of this? To stop all drug production into the UNited States? If so, thats impossible. And If your trying to make a drug free america, it wont happen because there is to many Legal and prescription drugs. And this isnt even arguing the simple facts that Marijauna isnt even that bad - most people who know the herb will tell you Alcohol is way worst and causes destruction but its legal because you cant control the urge of the masses.

... but its legal because you cant control the urge of the masses.

Sure you can. You just can't control the urges of the masses through the police and through half-assed efforts in the school system.

In any case, our lawmakers should have learned the folly and inefficiency of attempting to govern the citizens' penchant for recreational drugs in the Prohibition, but not five years after it is repealed they attempt to repeat the experiment with other drugs. It is truly amazing what the combination of racism and capitulation to business interests can do to common sense.

I may be reading too much into this, but I really think that legalizing marijuana will help cure a lot of social injustices in this nation. Stay with me. The vast majority of young African American people in the prison system (mostly males) are incarcerated for non-violent drug offenses, usually dealing marijuana. A vast majority of the time, the African Americans who are in prison for a non-violent drug offense come out of prison as a violent, hardened criminal. If marijuana is legalized, the prison population will decrease dramatically of non-violent drug offenders. Also, the dealer will be put out of business and the lure of quick money on the streets for inner city youth will be drastically reduced, causing more kids to stay in school (I'm a high school teacher in the Bronx so I can't tell you how many times I've seen kids drop out to deal, and make quite a bit of money before they either get killed or arrested). Gang violence would also be dramatically reduced as fighting over drug territory would be all but eliminated. Getting inner city youth off the streets and in the classrooms is the best way to create more equality in society, not through government handouts like the liberals believe. As much of a reach as it sounds, legalizing drugs would have a positive impact in inner city communities, moreso than a lot of people would suspect. Then there's the whole personal liberty thing too.....
