The Uniting American Families Act is still in the committees. Why? Why has it not passed onto House floor? That thing has been on the Committee for immigration for almost a year, now!

After reading about the horrible things that Shirley Tan and her family have had to go through, that bill should have passed Congress, signed by Obama, and taken into effect within a single week!

We're not even talking about marriage status and tax benefits, anymore. We're talking about a fundamental right to be with the one you love at all!

And as if that weren't enough, the chairwoman of the Immigration committee is in California, and she's even in the San Jose area, where Tan and Mercado reside! She's also a ****ing Democrat! What excuse does she have for delaying the passage of this bill? At this point, I'm not talking about Congress; I'm not even talking about the chairwoman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, Refugees, Border Security, and International Law. I'm talking about Zoe Lofgren in her individual capacity.

Considering the horrors that Shirley Tan, her wife, and her children (her own damn children) have been subjected to, why is this bill not passed yet? This bill needs passing, and it needs passing now (as in, set aside health care, set aside the deficit; this wrong needs to be righted RIGHT NOW!). Hell, even Perry v. Schwarzenegger can take a backseat, because being together in the first place is pre-requisite to being allowed to get married.

Why is it still on the committee, much less still in Congress? WHY? WHY?!

Oh come on! How often do I have to do this?

I make a thread.

I wait a few days.

Suddenly, I realize that it has scores of views, but not one reply!

For the love of god, how often do I have to make a second post just to get someone to not ignore me?!

Here you go.

Hope you feel better now.

That still does not explain why it is taking the committee, much less all of Congress, a year (a friggin' YEAR) to pass this bill.

Call your congressman. Or call the office of the committee chair.

It wasn't that important.

No we're not. There is absolutely nothing preventing gays from being together. This isn't V for Vendetta. The government isn't going out and kidnapping/murdering people for orientation.

I've already done that. I'm still waiting for a response (I wonder if they're even going to respond)

Have you even heard of Shirley Tan?

At this point, yes, we are talking about simply "being together." There is something "preventing gays from being together."

Hmm ... I bet they are stalling this on purpose.

There are 36,000 couples who are being injured, compensatorily, by this policy.

Congress has no business "stalling."

There's probably someone behind the shadows, kinda like Emperor Palpatine behind Darth Vader.

The burgerbuilders?

McDonald's, Burger King, Carls Jr, etc?
Shut up, you. This is a serious thread. Middleagedgamer and I are trying to finger out why this is being held up in committee. I fear a conspiracy is afoot.

Thank you.

So, what is Congress's OFFICIAL reason for still having it in the committees? If we know their official reason, maybe we can deduce the real one (it's usually the opposite of the official one).

If there is a conspiracy the official reason is probably that there is no conspiracy. Hmm.

Now, I know why the bill is not yet on the floor.

The whip vote does not look too good.

There are only 119 cosponsors, and 80 Representatives with a "leaning yes" position; absolutely no member of the House surveyed has a position of "definitely yes," without cosponsoring it.

So, even if all of them voted yea, that's only 199 Representatives. You need at least 218 Representatives to pass it on to the Senate, and even there, there is only 47 Senators who even slightly support the bill. Twenty have a whip vote of "unknown," so if they all pull a no-show when it comes time to vote, maybe it can get passed the Senate, but not the House.

The supporters of the bill want it passed, yes, but they don't want to put it to floor unless it stands a good chance of passing and getting sent to Obama's desk.

I have to agree with them on that. At this point, all we can do is find our Congressmen's positions on this bill, and, if they oppose it (if they are even "leaning no," or if they even have a position of "unknown"), email them and beg them to change their vote.

Here is the whip count for the House:
ACT On Principles Uniting American Families Act (UAFA) in House

And Senate:
ACT On Principles Uniting American Families Act (UAFA) in Senate

Please, send your emails, now.
