Why is this forum so overwhelming atheist? (1 Viewer)

I think it is an interesting sociological question. I'm curious what selective factors led to so many atheists or so few theists joining the forum.
Forum's differ in the people drawn to them, this forum is more liberal than conservative. As a result less religious.

Why its makeup turned out the way it did, who knows.

They absolutely do exist and they predated the Abrahamic religions(Judaism, Christianity, and then Islam) This is also why hearsay laws exist because there are other religions and gods but they are forbidden.
They only exist in the minds of true believers, whether it be the Christian God or Thor.

FSM does exist!!!! Admit this or you shall be simmered in salted water for eternity. If after a millennia of torture in boiling water, you repent, you shall be resurrected and served with a spicy marinara, meatballs and Romano cheese.

All gods are invented. Other gods do claim to exist and they predated the Abrahamic religions(Judaism, Christianity, and then Islam) This is also why hearsay laws exist because there are other religions and gods but they are forbidden.
Your reply sums up humankind's predicament very well. Unless you believe in eternal consciousness.

I don't share your perception. Can you provide some examples?
Look up the at least weekly threads started by Dragonfly...and any other religious topic or thread started and see how quickly it devolves into expressions of bigotry. There is no real discussion on religion here. Even the threads couched in actual discussion are just springboards for attack on religion. Which is why most people tend to stay away or give it little more than a mere cursory response. There is no value in it.

Even this thread. How quickly does it devolve into attacks on faith or insults on intelligence of those that profess faith.

Nope. The soul is also a religious idea that is unproven.

Only carbon, hydrogen, helium, and oxygen are eternal.
Someone could easily say then that all is eternal due to that fact, since all has been made from them.

I always suspected this, but the recent poll showed just how disproportionate it is. Whereas the majority of the general population is theistic. Why is this?

It can’t be just because the forum has more left leaning members. A lot of our conservative members are libertarian right atheists (the forum also leans libertarian to the general population imo).

My best theory is it’s because the type of people drawn to online forums in general are a bit techy, usually have a higher degree of formal education, and are atheists. But it really is a massive discrepancy compared to the general population. Thoughts?
Atheists are the world's biggest optimists.

Subscribed. I wanna know too. Atheists are a growing minority in the US, but still a minority.

The board has an international membership. The US is an anomalous outlier, where much of the developed world is over religion.

Please dont make me try to explain entropy and the universe today. I don't feel up to that much typing, and correcting my many typos.

Did you forget that Red and Sweeddy created a religious believer sub-forum where atheism is forbidden to be discussed?

Well, it's a political forum, so that kinda makes sense. No?
Any more so than discussions on sports? Leisure activities? music? etc.

LOTS of diverse topics open for discussion outside of 'just' politics. But also...not a lot of discussion.

You lumped atheists and agnostics into a single option and you are assuming that everyone who selected it is an atheist.

Religion has been shoved down peoples throats for millennia, now its them getting a taste of they're own medicine.

Don't like it, don't go to the beliefs section of the forum.

If you read all the way to the bottom of the OP, MNG asks for you to explain your religious/lack of beliefs and why.

If you are agnostic then say that in a reply and explain why. I am an atheist but also a Humanist. Not all humanists are atheists and certainly not all atheists are humanists.

What are your religions? Why?

But, unlike Trump, you do have a very good brain, though I do know that disorder will rule the "day" eventually.

There is a Theology section, you might do better there, less participants I'm sure.

Attaboy. Embrace that religious hatred and bigotry...and make sure you never forget....its 'the other guys'....not YOU......

:ROFLMAO:

Thanks for your thoughtful consideration. Your opinion expressed in your manner is SOOOO important to me.

I would not place myself in the top 10 or even the top 20 of this forum. If you rank me by typos, I am somewhere close to the bottom. I have Grammarly and there are many times where Grammarly has given up trying to decode my typos. Its a rare gift.

Most days I stumble through life trying not to make the same mistake twice.

Atheism and Agnosticism are entirely separate, distinct, and opposing beliefs but were combined as a single poll option. The OP poll had 83 participants only a fraction of whom created a post in the thread. It’s a bad poll and the author of this thread is assuming that everyone who selected the combined option did so because they’re atheists.
