With the illegitimate change in Ukrainian government, Russia could no longer trust it's navel base in Sevastopol would continue. They acted to preserve their military interests. This is a very complex situation. Most people do not understand they intricacies. The started taking Crimea six days after the coup. Then Ukraine had a rebellion in the eastern provinces because of the coup. Call it an excuse if you want, but then Russian went into eastern Ukraine also.

This all started because of the 2014 coup.

The West just needs to achkowledge it. The West can be very fast on acknowledgeing things it likes.

The West immediatly acknowledged their independence.
So now it needs to acknowledge an independence of Donbass, Zaporizhnia and Crimea. Their referenda. Their right to self determination. It's easy!
