The takeover of Twitter by Elon Musk has been hailed as a great achievement and an advancement in "freedom of speech" by the Right. I know the following is a bit dated but if it is an indication just how much the Right are now going to enjoy their new found "freedom of speech", maybe the take over will have been worth it.

  • A social-media research group told The Washington Post the use of the slur increased by nearly 500%.

"Elon now controls twitter. Unleash the racial slurs. K---S AND N-----S," said one account, using slurs for Jewish and Black people, per the outlet.

Of course, most political discussion boards would not allow this, there IS moderation, so those on the Right can't say what they feel, so one has to wonder how many of them will now feel free to say what they feel using Twitter?

Thank you Elon Musk for providing an outlet for them to express themselves.
 
Said it before and will say it again: Musk is only exposing himself as a bullshitter. If I'm an investor in Tesla or SpaceX, I'm rethinking. Not because he's a bad person (I mean maybe he is, but I wouldn't make investment decisions on that basis). I'd rethink because Musk is clearly mentally unstable. He's making really stupid decisions and you're smoking some really strong hopium if you think his instability is confined to Twitter. And given all the exposure of frauds like in crypto and other areas of the economy lately, it's worth asking if Musk isn't really just a total crypto-like fraud at this point.

On one hand, sure, he's had well-documented success - can't take that away from him. He is not really an engineer by trade, nor was Steve Jobs, but like Jobs, Musk has had ideas and acquired enough technical knowledge to understand what he needed to make those ideas a reality. He learned how to organize teams, how to manage product/project development, how to create a vision and market that vision, and he's had undeniable success doing so.

But the big difference between Musk and others like Jobs, like Gates, like Bezos, is that somewhere along the way Musk convinced himself that he did it all by himself and that people are just commodities and interchangeable pieces that can be switched out like tires, hoses, and fan belts. It's on full display for all to see. It's kinda sad really, but I feel more sympathy for the individual lives and reputations that are being damaged by his recklessness.

An inauspicious start to say the least. Musk's ultimatums have been walked back; the most recent one of workers opting in for long work hours at high intensity. Hundreds quit in response.

What's with all this crazy character assassination? The guys a crazed workaholic and he has all the accomplishments to show for it. He knows how to monetize his talents and he a knack for taking huge risks and making good decisions. That don't make the guy bad or evil. You dislike him only because you disagree with him politically. But if you carefully look at what he does, his actions aren't even political.

Nice speech, BUT................ none of what you just said addresses the issue of the increase in the use of the N word on twitter since he announced a more open and "free" platform. Might not say much about him but certainly says a LOT about what kind of people will take advantage of this new open policy.

What will be more telling is what happens over time than just that initial reaction of people trolling or testing the waters of moderation. I don't expect that to be a long standing problem since there will be some form of moderation.

It's opposite. You need the ying and the yang, a counterbalance. That's why I detest when these whites say we need to get rid of affirmative action (with the very little that it does to begin with). We had to force white people to comply with civil rights with literal guns. Freedom or meritocracy by default, aways = white supremacy.

It's obviously beginning to sink into Elon's mind that he may have pushed too far and that there's a limit to how much of his bullshit people are going to tolerate. I think he walked in assuming that because the company was bleeding money that these were just desperate, incompetent hangers on who would be awestruck by his presence and beg him for the chance to remain on board. Totally misread the room on that one, and I wouldn't be surprised if the backlash extends to his other companies. If Twitter can force him to make some concessions, why can't overworked Tesla and SpaceX employees do the same? This is the position Musk now finds himself in, and it's unclear to me how he navigates his way out of this. I think something has to give.

There may still be time for Musk to rehabilitate his image, back away from Twitter, turn it over to someone who can manage the company by channeling Elon's spirit somehow without the abrasion. I saw on Twitter that he was up all night with some coders - most likely the ones needed to keep the critical infrastructure running. He's at least got that part covered for now, but he'll need to fix the data that keeps the product usable (i.e, hack and troll proof)

That's an interesting point, though the only benefit his existing companies might have is an already established work culture. It's a whole different proposition to acquire another company and try and force a new work culture in a short amount of time; especially in the way he seems to have handled it. Rallying people around the brand and communicating the need to work hard to turn things around can be effective, but from what one can see from the outside looking in is that no real vision has been communicated for people to rally around. The other problem is much of the issues Twitter is facing were caused by Musk's rhetoric going into the acquisition.

Given our society's short attention span, you're probably right; though it will likely take an idea that people can support. If Musk comes up with some innovative way to change Twitter, I'm sure there will be a quick shift to that versus pining on what the company used to be. Perhaps it's time that Musk finds his public voice, because he's had the luxury of being though of more as a quirky leader in the background making cool things. He's taken the front stage at a social media company where some more refinement is needed; that abrasive way he has is an easy way to put people off. This is why you sometimes have creators of companies get a CEO to not only handle the business side of things, but also be the face of the company.

I could care less what his political leanings or persuasions are. I didn’t even especially care that he bought Twitter.

The way he’s treating the employees and contractors at Twitter is abusive.

I hope the entire thing implodes around him for that alone.

You know the saying... 10% of the workers do 90% of the work. In technology it's true more than anywhere. These high performers don't do it for just the money, rather they're highly passionate and excited about their work, they're opinionated and they want to surrounded by like minded people to compete and bounce their ideas off of. 80 hours a week is torture and abuse for those who don't really want to be there. But there are some people who don't mind living at work in order to be a key contributor of something big.
