Why don't we eat grass?

Food costs money ... . If you have nothing, you may eat a salad if given to you. But why don't we eat grass? It is everywhere. Does it kill you? Or is it only non-nutricious? What would be the consequences, if I started to eat just grass?
 
dandelions are edible and trendy in salad and people spend a fortune to keep them out of their yards.

Have at it - my Grandmother told me stories about having to cultivate their lawn for food.

Most grasses aren't really digestible-I don't think any are poisonous like that. . . but certain grasses are harvested to be eaten (bamboo, grains, etc) - it's all grass.
 
My guess is that most grasses would not be that beneficial nutrition wise but would be filler to keep the bowels working. I know poke weeds are poisonous raw but they can be cooked through a few waters to be made safe. Old folks do it but I have never tried it nor would I. Odds are we digest grass particles whenever we mow but don't drop dead from it.

Just regular old grass? You would die. We lack the specific enzyme necessary to digest and get nutrients from it. Grass contains cellulose. We can't digest that.
 
for one thing we don't have the right kind of digestive tract to process raw grasses.

Per my survivor training:
Lettuce and grass are different.
You can eat it in fact all grasses native in the US are edible.
It will not kill you.
There is very little nutrient value in grass, in both humans and ruminents (cattle). This is why the better forages (hay) are legumes (clover, alfalfa, etc.)
Just grass...you would starve to death regardless of how much you consume BUT if you added some nuts or the seeds from the grass you could survive for quite some time. In fact a handful of acorns has roughly the same protien as a pound of ground beef.

Then they need to stop putting it in our freakin parmesan cheese. :lol:

You can replace a lot of your grass with more nutritious plants and still have a yard and extra food if you have the space. I have a pretty abundant high yield garden, and I plant edible flowers (though I seldom eat them), have fruit and nut trees/shrubs (there if I need them but mostly for the critters) and still have mostly yard on the open acre part of my property. I am all Mother Earth News granola when it comes to integrating plants into my landscape. Unfortunately zoning prevents me from doing some of the things I want, so I am eyeing property in the close-in boonies to build a new house on so I can complete my metamorphosis into post-modern Hippie-dom.

i want to add that marijuana is very tasty, much more so than grass, perhaps we should use it to adorn our lawns instead of grass?

But people complain we're lazy enough already.

I voted no when it came across my ballot - I'm a stickler for the already established rules.
 
Those stupid little maple tree seed pod helicopter thingies are edible when they are new and tender, but I wouldn't want to eat them. Most wild greenery stuff is rather bitter even if you can safely eat them.
