I grew up with those values, to treat all people with respect as individuals... but not to be blind to what exist in society.
I was told as a kid, while living in a segregated society, "that when or if someone uses a racial slur to me", that what they mean by it, can apply to them as well, because they aim to "denigrate" and it says more about them, than it does about me; because they don't know me.
You know and I know... that in general the mass of society, does not invest in learning the civics, the civil rights of "all" people... and the elements of folklore passed on race bias, bigotry has been spread in society and certainly within the ranks of the under-educated and the uneducated.
