I am a bit of a philosophy enthusiast- and the term "ataraxia" comes from ancient Greek philosophy- mostly from the Epicurean, Stoic, and skeptic schools of thought- but also others. It meant slightly different things in each of these schools- but all gravitating around a general idea. But I like the concept- it even has some resonances with the Buddhist concept of Nirvana.
The etymology of the word: "The term
"ataraxia" originates from the
Greek word ἀταραξία, meaning "impassiveness" or "freedom from emotional disturbance." It is derived from the prefix
"a-" meaning "not" or "without," and
"tarassein," which means "to disturb". The concept was notably used by the philosopher
Epicurus as a key component of his ethical system, representing a state of tranquility and serenity."
Admittedly, it IS somewhat difficult to have any "freedom from emotional disturbance" with the shirt that girl is wearing....
