This is a topic we're going over in my Ethics class. I thought it was a pretty interesting discussion and thought that some on this board might be interested in said discussion.

Basically the question is:

When a child is born with an ambiguous genitalia, there is normally an operation to "correct" this condition. Some intersexual children grow up having surgeries below the belt until adolesence. Should intersexual children be "corrected," or is there nothing there to be corrected? Should the decision be left to the children for when they grow up or should parents try to make life easier for the child?

the problem with doing the surgery at birth, is that there isnt a good way to know the gender of the child. note that gender and sex are not the same thing. a lot of intersexed individuals have gone through some tramatic experiences because they were brought up as the wrong gender. I think it should at least be delayed until the kid hits puberty, by then they probably have a much stronger sense of gender identity and can choose which sex to be assigned to.
