i saw the video clip last night, the whalers seemed to be in the right according to colregs. the protesters took this too far, imo. they were at fault for this crash.Charges could be laid over whaling clash
who do you believe is in the wrong
and what is your opinion on whaling

as for whaling, i don't like it.
If the whaling ship deliberately rammed the protesters ship, then the whaling ship is at fault.
Controlled whaling is no worse than controlled deer hunting. As long as animal species aren't wiped out and can sustain themselves, there's nothing wrong with hunting them.
didn't look like that to me........i'd bet the whaling ship won't be found liable. If the whaling ship deliberately rammed the protesters ship, then the whaling ship is at fault.

The fat whale d00d, is an incompetant pirate, who should be shot.
HE should also be held criminally liable for damages and injury....
they are attacking the japanese fleet, should they not defend themselves?

6. Safe speed
Any vessel must proceed at a safe speed, which she can to take action to avoid collision and able to stop within the distance for the prevailing conditions (including the visibility, weather, traffic condition, background lights, her manoevrability (e.g. stopping distance and turning circles) and draft in relation with the available water).
When radar is in use, also consider if there is any limitations of the equipment, range scale in use, weather and other interference, weak targets, targets density and movement, and use radar to judge the visibility is much accurate for objects nearby.
7. Risk of Collision
Vessels must use all available means to determine the risk of a collision, including the use of radar (if available) to get early warning of the risk of collision by radar plotting or equivalent systematic observation of detected objects. (e.g. ARPA, AIS).
If the distance of any vessel is reduced and her compass bearing does not change much or a large vessel or towing vessel at close distance or if in doubt, risk of collision shall be deemed to exist.
8. Action to avoid collision
Actions taken to avoid collision should be:
positive
obvious
made in good time
...
the thing about that is whaling for food is illegal, and most whale species are endangered already
defend themselves from an immobile boat?
clearly the japanese ship knew where the smaller craft was to be able to target the water guns at them
the obligation of the larger vessel was to avoid the other boat; instead, it rammed that boat

Did Japan agree to abide by this law?
Prove that Japan isn't hunting them for scientific purposes.
The meal in front of me at Ganso Kujiraya in Tokyo is enough to turn the stomach of even casual conservationists. They would find little to trouble the conscience in the bowls of steaming rice and miso soup, or the side dishes of mitsuba leaves and radish pickles. But the centrepiece, seven perfectly rectangular slices of glistening ruby-red whale flesh, transforms this otherwise unremarkable Japanese dish into what is arguably the world’s most politically sensitive lunch.

There were tons of articles about this.
well if they didnt, why would they be hiding behind scientific research?Did Japan agree to abide by this law?

I'm hungry for NoBu now......
Isn;t that the place in SoHo?

how much is there about whales to learn?
and why does most of the whale end up at a restraunt?
I don't like the tactics that the protesters resort to with the harassment of the whaling ships.
I don't like the fact that the Japanese are whaling for meat and use a technicality to get away with it.
Both are wrong.
The simple solution might be to change the treaty and not allow the whale meat to be sold in markets.
The Institute of Cetacean Research, the non-profit organization that conducts the hunt, said the Ady Gil came "within collision distance" of the Nisshin Maru's bow and repeatedly dangled a rope in the water that could have entangled the ship's rudder and propeller.
The Ady Gil's crew lobbed small projectiles designed to release a foul smell, and the whalers responded by firing high-powered hoses to keep the Sea Shepherd vessels away, the institute said in a statement.
the ship had a right to defend themself from these terrorists.
OMG, is everything an act of terrorism these days?
No, but this is.
