I am going to settle this now and for the record the age at when you can date and who you can date.
For starters, this is completely gender neutral, so no edge to females dating older men or any disadvantage to same sex couples.
Dating starts at age 12. You may date boys or girls two who are less than three years older or younger than you as long as they are at least 12 because that’s when puberty starts and that’s around the age at which kids start learning what sex is. Every new year that passes gives you a new age group but takes one away. For example, a 14 year old’s dating range is 12–16. A year later, that will be 13–17.
This changes once you turn 16 because that’s when half your age plus 7 kicks in for the older side. You can now date people three years older (19). A year later, you can date people four years older (21). Once you turn 18, you don’t really need to follow this rule because legally, you can date whoever you want but if you’re still concerned about whether your relationship with a much older guy or a barely legal teen will get you ugly looks, you can keep following it.
At 18, you can date up to 23 before it becomes creepy. This is also the age at which the half your age plus 7 kicks in for younger people. This doesn’t matter at 18 because the lowest you can date is still 16 which is two years lower. But once you turn 19, the age floor is still 16, allowing you to date people three years younger. At 20, the age floor moves up one to 17. The next year, it’s still 17, allowing you to date people four years younger.
To clarify, every odd number year lets you date someone an additional year younger while every even year closes off a year. Every year allows you to date someone an additional year older after turning 16.
