Biden clearly won the debate. Palin performed as I expected she would. Not as bad as the interviews, but I'm not sure she answered a question during the entire debate.

Biden did make mistakes, as did Palin.

While Palin exceeded the expectations of many by not making a fool out of herself, that doesn’t score any points in my book. For the position of president and vice president, simply rising above looking like un unprepared hillbilly isn’t enough.

Maybe that down home "dog gonnit" manner of Palin works for some. It doesn't for me. That part of Palin's delivery was excruciating. I prefer my political leaders to sound, well, somewhat, cosmopolitan and smart, I guess. Biden did; Palin did not, though she didn’t sound like an idiot either.

I am very happy to read this from an Independent. I hope other Independents feel like you do.

I remember 4 years ago when my bro-in-law told my husband and me about George Bush, "I like the fact that he sounds like me." What the hell kind of statement is that? I want a president and vice president that are SMARTER than I am.

Palin clearly won the debate, she took command from the very beginning and kept on old Joe all night. I liked how she told them she was going to answer the questions her way, and then she didn't let them just gloss over the issues, she went back and made sure she got her positions across.
That's what a leader does.

Biden with all of his supposed experience, kept his head afloat, and Palin with her 5 weeks of national experience, came across to the American people.

A few gaffes on both sides, but Palin finished strong, Biden was skipping and jumping around incoherently before he gave his closing.

Indeed a nightmare for the Obama camp.

Ahh I see you got the RNC talking points in the mail.

I'll have to wait for the transcript to give more details but here are a few.

Palin said Obama voted 94 times to increase taxes or not support a tax reduction. Lie.

Palin said Obama's plan would turn America's health care over the the feds. Lie.

Palin said Obama's supported increasing taxes on families making as low as $42,000 Lie.

These are all true....

Can the debate be found on youtube yet or anywhere else I might be able to watch it at?

So you must have hated Clinton.

No. And you asking such a question is just a classic example of the liberal agenda to classify the republicans as unintelligent hicks.

ROTFLMAO! Expecting the person in a debate to answer the question is a "liberal agenda".

I'm sure though many Palin/McCain supporters feel as you do.

If you don't like when candidates dodge issues and throw our campaign slogans instead of answers, you must really not have liked Obama's performance last week.

To the contrary, he answered most questions knowledgably and logically.

The first polls of the Vice-Presidential debate are already in. A CNN poll run by Opinion Research shows that 51% of the voters think Joe Biden did the best job at the debate and 36% thought Sarah Palin did the best job. As to beating the expectations (which both parties were trying furiously to set as low as possible), both did. Eighty-four percent said Palin did better than expected and 64% said Biden did better than expected. But debating skills and beating artificially low expectations don't really matter. What matters is whether the candidate is qualified to be President should the need arise. On this score, Biden clearly won as 87% said Biden is qualified to be President and only 42% said Palin is.

CBS also did a quickie poll among uncommitted voters. In this one, 46% said Biden won and only 21% said Palin won. In terms of being knowledgeable about the issues, 98% think Biden is and 66% think Palin is. On the key question of whether the candidate could be an effective President, 91% said Biden could be and only 44% said Palin could be, similar to the CNN poll.

I'm amazed how differently we see things. McCain, of which I was never a big fan, showed a good knowledge of international affairs and significant historical insights. The more I learn about McCain, the more I like (even though I do not agree with him on all issues). Obama is a fraud who might destroy this country and I pity Biden that he has to compromise some of his viewpoints (as can be proven by research) just to maintain his place in Obama's camp. Do you notice how the McCain/Palin ticket allows free thought on issues - Palin has some differences with McCain but not on fundamental issues most critical to running the country. It's refreshing that she can be herself and be honest. You won't get that from Obama/Biden. Also, don't forget that this debate allowed the TV viewing audience to see Palin without the selective network editing as was done in prior interviews (definitely Gibson's and possibly Couric's) to make Palin look bad. Tonight Palin was seen for the incredible candidate that she is.

Gosh darn say it ain't so you betcha. Just incredible. What other candidate could have come off so cutesy? For the crowd that votes based on whether they'd like to have beers with the candidate, she's a hit.

Palin won, she won on style, on connecting. She won by not sounding like she did in the couric debate. She was great on energy issues, and taxes. She was okay on FP and was most indirect on seante issues.

The real loser tonight was Tina Fey.

Did we watch the same debate?! Her winks at the camera were juvenille, flirtatious and completely amateur. Her diversion from the questions were obvious as she rambled on in her monologues about her accomplishments.

The flip remarks to the moderator as she diverted (saying that she won't answer the question like they want her to) was just a clear cut sign that she was floundering and wanted to stay on her canned answers. She continually took the debate in a direction that enabled her to use her standard practiced answers.

She didn't bomb as badly as she could have. She didn't shine either.
Biden stayed on course, answered questions concisely and frankly, blew her away.

She was flirting her way through the debate. Scary **** when you think about how she might handle herself in dealing with foreign dignitaries.

I think there are a lot of bang-on assessments in this thread, starting with the OP. Palin did better than expected, but honestly, who expected her to hit a grand slam? The bar was set low, and she exceed expectations probably way beyond those who had serious doubts. So good for her.

Having said that, if expectations were high, then I think her performance would have been disappointing. At times she seemed too plastic, rehearsed, folksy, and over the top. She had trouble answering questions in a direct way. She reminded me of Frances McDormand's character in Fargo, and not a candidate for VP of the United States of America.

Biden was the winner in my book. Though he did make gaffes, he came across as being knowledgeable and aware of what America needs at this time. He did a great job of pointing out the flaws of McCain and Bush, but frankly, I much preferred when he brought up the plans that both he and Obama have to get the US back on track. Best of all, he played his cards right as the way he handled Palin could have backfired big time.

As far as I'm concerned, only a MAJOR Swiftboating can change the inevitable future Presidency of Barack Obama.

And Obama reminds me of Chauncey Gardener/Being There. Obama followers are in for a rude awakening when things become progressively worse in this country, should he win. Check out the south side of Chi town for all his 'hope and change' did over there. Nothing. Nada. Zippo. Why hasn't anybody come forward from Obama's community organizing days to say what a transforming influence he was?

Because once he left his church, his beliefs were off limits.

So when he left Chicago, what he did there is off limits.

Obama has an agreement with the press to not look at his past at all - and only focus on his promises for the future.

My friend said this exact same thing.

As per chapter 4 section 3.854 of the Jinx penal code, you are now my friend.

Biden definitely, but I'll say that it could have been a lot worse of Palin than it was. She at least was able to keep up mostly.

That would be funny. I don't think she'll be having anymore kids though.

I'd bet on "Maverick".

FactChecking Biden-Palin Debate
October 3, 2008
The candidates were not 100 percent accurate. To say the least.
Summary
Biden and Palin debated, and both mangled some facts.

* Palin mistakenly claimed that troop levels in Iraq had returned to “pre-surge” levels. Levels are gradually coming down but current plans would have levels higher than pre-surge numbers through early next year, at least.

* Biden incorrectly said “John McCain voted the exact same way” as Obama on a controversial troop funding bill. The two were actually on opposite sides.

* Palin repeated a false claim that Obama once voted in favor of higher taxes on “families” making as little as $42,000 a year. He did not. The budget bill in question called for an increase only on singles making that amount, but a family of four would not have been affected unless they made at least $90,000 a year.

* Biden wrongly claimed that McCain “voted the exact same way” as Obama on the budget bill that contained an increase on singles making as little as $42,000 a year. McCain voted against it. Biden was referring to an amendment that didn't address taxes at that income level.

* Palin claimed McCain’s health care plan would be “budget neutral,” costing the government nothing. Independent budget experts estimate McCain's plan would cost tens of billions each year, though details are too fuzzy to allow for exact estimates.

* Biden wrongly claimed that McCain had said "he wouldn't even sit down" with the government of Spain. Actually, McCain didn't reject a meeting, but simply refused to commit himself one way or the other during an interview.

* Palin wrongly claimed that “millions of small businesses” would see tax increases under Obama’s tax proposals. At most, several hundred thousand business owners would see increases.

For full details on these misstatements, and on additional factual disputes and dubious claims, please read on to the Analysis section.
