White House Slaps Musk’s Twitter For Labeling NPR ‘State-Affiliated’

The world’s second-wealthiest man Elon Musk continues to stir up drama as his tenure as Twitter’s owner/CEO enters its sixth month, controversially giving NPR the same labeling as Chinese and Russian propaganda machines on his social media site this week, sparking backlash from the outlet and the Biden Administration.

Twitter labeled NPR as “US state-affiliated media” late Tuesday, earning it the same label as state-controlled outlets like China’s People Daily and Russia’s TASS, an apparently targeted change that NPR’s CEO John Lansing called “unacceptable” and “disturb[ing]” in a Wednesday statement.

NPR criticizes Twitter for slapping it with a ‘state-affiliated media’ label

Washington, DC CNN —
NPR sharply criticized Twitter on Wednesday after the social media platform, in an apparent violation of its own policies, labeled the radio broadcaster as a “state-affiliated media” organization akin to foreign propaganda outlets such as Russia’s RT and Sputnik.

In a statement, NPR CEO John Lansing called the decision to lump NPR in with other outlets that Twitter identifies as being under government control as “unacceptable.”

“We were disturbed to see last night that Twitter has labeled NPR as ‘state-affiliated media,’ a description that, per Twitter’s own guidelines, does not apply to NPR,” Lansing said. “NPR and our member stations are supported by millions of listeners who depend on us for the independent, fact-based journalism we provide. NPR stands for freedom of speech and holding the powerful accountable. It is unacceptable for Twitter to label us this way. A vigorous, vibrant free press is essential to the health of our democracy.”

Once called out on their bullshit, Musk waffled...

"The operating principle at new Twitter is simply fair and equal treatment, so if we label non-US accounts as govt, then we should do the same for US, but it sounds like that might not be accurate here," he wrote.

It was a turnaround from a tweet he sent hours earlier that the state-affiliated label for NPR "seems accurate."

Amid the conflicting remarks, in a Thursday email, Musk restated his interest in applying "any given rule fairly to all," and he said the label for NPR's account is still being evaluated.

Musk's comments to NPR over the past two days only further clouded what was already a confusing situation.

But it's not the first time chaos was the norm on the social media site.

Since Musk took over the platform in October, Twitter has at times taken a hostile stance toward the national press. Musk's row with NPR is just the latest instance of the Twitter CEO's increasingly confrontational stance toward the mainstream media, which often covers Musk and his companies critically.

You describe their statement as "whines".

Well I think I should reward them with a big donation for the most incredibly sophisticated whine Ive ever read.

Isabel Lara, NPR’s chief communications officer, said the broadcaster had not been notified that the label would be added to its account and had learned of the change only when it appeared on Twitter. She added that NPR had contacted Twitter and had not heard back. She noted that, on average, less than 1 percent of NPR’s annual operating budget comes in the form of grants from the government-funded Corporation for Public Broadcasting and other federal agencies and departments.

Elon Musk appeared to be uncertain about why exactly he gave NPR’s Twitter account a ‘state-sponsored media’ label Wednesday, according to a series of emails exchanged between the billionaire and NPR reporters. On Wednesday, upon learning that only 1% of the outlet’s funds come from government support, Musk wrote, “Well, then we should fix it.” According to NPR, Musk appeared confused by the difference between public media and state-controlled media. In another message, NPR reports that Musk compared the outlet to state-controlled media: “The operating principle at new Twitter is simply fair and equal treatment, so if we label non-US accounts as govt, then we should do the same for US, but it sounds like that might not be accurate here.” The label still remains as of Thursday evening. Musk told NPR Twitter is still evaluating the case.

Are we pretending NPR isn't funded by the government?
FACT- We are forced to pay for their biased blabbing.
They can't make it on their own. Stations that that have hosts that lean to the right seem to make money.
NPR has to take the welfare. Don't give me the 1% of their revenue lie. That has been proven to be pure bs.

'gripe first, think later' is his new motto.

Interesting. Show us a link.

Elon is right. Follow the money. According to Wiki:
Funding for NPR comes from dues and fees paid by member stations, underwriting from corporate sponsors and annual grants from the publicly-funded Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Most of its member stations are owned by non-profit organizations, including public school districts, colleges, and universities.

If that isn't 'state-affiliated media' I don't know what is.

It's the beneficiary of a money-laundering operation originating from the state

1% isn't funded by the government...they receive a grant....99% of the funding they have comes from other sources.

Nonprofits, colleges and universities are private organizations and schools...or did you not realize that? Perhaps in Russia they are all state owned..but not in the US.

NPR is about as unbiased a news source as you can find in the American media hellscape.

I am addicted to talk shows and I have been tuning in to WHRO's programming for years on WHRV FM 89.5 in my truck, golf course, and at work. I enjoy the programming. Considering that the only other afternoon alternative I have now days is the "Clay & Buck" show (can't stand those two hacks) PBS/NPR is still a godsend.

But please don't tell me that NPR/PBS doesn't have a left leaning perspective. Most polls show that it does as well.

My only real complaint against PBS/NPR is that I would prefer that the issues being discussed all the points and counterpoints PBS/NPR hosts are a little weak on offering counterpoints.

But like I said, I personally enjoy the programming and I believe it is always worthwhile listen for anyone.

"All Things Considered" is probably the best of of their shows IMO.

LMAO.. Who is quoting Elon… good lord..
I'm not quoting Elon on his opinion of himself -- but you're quoting NPR on their opinion of themselves -- ridiculous

Ack! Some warning should be given before springing Tucker Carlson on unsuspecting readers.

“We’re all pretending we’ve got a lot to show for it, because admitting what a disaster it’s been is too tough to digest. But come on. There really isn’t an upside to Trump.”
— Tucker Carlson

Will Elmo do the same thing to Fox when a New Republican is back in the White House?

Incorrect. For example, NPR broadcasts on WOSU in central Ohio because it’s using stations that are owned and operated by the very public Ohio State University.

Then go ahead and show us legitimate links to contradict the 1% claim. I'll wait.
