"White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Friday sought to clarify President Trump’s statement that he “didn’t have to” declare a national emergency at the border, but did so to speed up construction of his long-promised wall."

“I could do the wall over a long period of time. I didn’t need to do this, but I’d rather do it much faster,” Trump conceded."

Appears Trump blew it in his own proclamation, "didn't have to" and "didn't need to do this" are going to be the central theme of every lawsuit stemming from his "emergency." Tough to defend something as an "emergency" when you preface it with "didn't have to" and "didn't need to do this." Even beer belly Brett is going to struggle rationalizing that one

Trump's advisers much live in fear every time he drifts away from the teleprompter

As far as them trying to contain Trump's mouth, there is a better likelihood that we'll see Stephen Hawking representing England in the next Olympics, running the Marathon.
 
Uh, yeah...no. Sorry, but the President's words matter. His words mattered when he owned the shutdown and they'll matter when they're used in court.

Judiciary Committee Democrats are opening an investigation into Trump's declaration of national emergency. They're calling on WH counsel and DOJ officials to testify on the Hill.

As per Greg Sergeant: "Today, Trump justified his national emergency with multiple lies. He then claimed he gets his numbers from "Homeland Security primarily." Guess who's testifying on Capitol Hill on March 6th? Kirstjen Nielsen. That give Dems a big opening."

"He meant it didn't need to come to this, if only there had been some honest cooperation".

That probably is what he meant. I doubt he would flaunt the absurdity of the moment.

The POTUS should set an example of civil discourse. He set the tone even before the election.

But back to his statement at hand.....

What about this statement says "national emergency" to you?

While the reporters were giving him specifics, his answers were more vague or downright inaccurate.

When he goes off teleprompter, he says what he really thinks. And it is all about him.

The takeaway from the press conference is that he likes abc more than nbc....and will only respect Democrats that go along with what he says.
 

With only the words, I didn't have to or need to...he screwed himself...an EMERGENCY is reserved for something you have no other option for....for instance....Pearl Harbor being bombed...the president had to declare a state of emergency.

The President has broad authority to declare National Emergencies...Don't like it? Blame Congress.

you might not like that when it comes to a President declaring a national emergency to rid you of your guns.
 

I know this is really hard for a Trump supporter, really difficult to process.

But Trump said something, categorically, unbelievably stupid, like, just mind blowingly stupid after declaring the national emergency, it defies imagination.

I know that is inconvenient and I don't know what Helix being a staff member, has anything to do with calling the President a dolt, when he's being one, but, that's a little stupid there as well.

Trump just made it much, much broader. This is a Pandora's Box that is unlikely to end with Trump.

Not only would such an action be illegal, but if members of the armed forces obeyed his command, they would be committing a federal crime.

Begin with the basics. From the founding onward, the American constitutional tradition has profoundly opposed the president’s use of the military to enforce domestic law. A key provision, rooted in an 1878 statute and added to the law in 1956, declares that whoever “willfully uses any part of the Army or the Air Force” to execute a law domestically “shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years” — except when “expressly authorized by the Constitution or Act of Congress.”

Another provision, grounded in a statute from 1807 and added to the law in 1981, requires the secretary of defense to “ensure that any activity (including the provision of any equipment or facility or the assignment or detail of any personnel)” must “not include or permit direct participation by a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps in a search, seizure, arrest, or other similar activity unless participation in such activity by such member is otherwise authorized by law.”

If President Trump declared an emergency, Section Five of the act gives the House of Representatives the right to repudiate it immediately, then pass their resolution to the Senate — which is explicitly required to conduct a floor vote within 15 days. Since President Trump’s “emergency” declaration would be a direct response to his failure to convince Congress that national security requires his wall, it is hard to believe that a majority of the Senate, if forced to vote, would accept his show of contempt for their authority.
The Supreme Court’s 1953 decision in Youngstown v. Sawyer would be critical in Congressional consideration of such a decision. In a canonical opinion by Justice Robert Jackson, the court invalidated President Truman’s attempt in 1952 to use his powers as commander in chief to nationalize steel mills in the face of labor strikes.

How refreshing for a Trump advocate to admit he is the lowest common denominator.

Refreshing, but usuless....since his base will applaud him despite his ongoing hateful rhetoric and outright unprecedented level of lying.


But he luckily has the Mueller Team to at least drain part of the swamp.....

Perhaps he should take the money earmarked for purple states to show how serious he is...

Taking it from California and Puerto Rico disaster relief would just rally his base.
