White House pulls out of summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un

Just a guess: Trump will urge KJU to substantively govel to get the summit put back on the calendar.

Other thoughts:

  • Strategic/tactical initiative --> I truly think Trump was irked that KJU and Moon had met and to some extent moved forward without him. (He made a face-saving remark about that, but everyone knows that he was I think that the cancellation is Trump's way of retaking the initiative he lost when they did that.
  • Preparation --> From scuttlebutt I've heard, the front-work hadn't been done by the Trump Administration. Myriad details -- not the least of which being something so basic as the meeting's scope -- hadn't been agreed by the two sides. I think, given Trump's general novelty and naivete about multiple things (nuclear tech, military strategy, diplomacy, and more), little good was to come of the meeting even were it to happen, for there's no telling what Donald "Nobody Knew It Could Be So Complicated" Trump would have found acceptable or not.

Based on that scuttlebutt combined with the haste with which the meeting was conceived, I thought the meeting was likely not to happen anyway. For that meeting to have happened, the WH and Trump would have had to have been very heavily consumed with preparing for it, and we all know that what's consumed Trump's attention in the past months has been the Russia investigation and the conjuration of conspiracy theories related to it and other political matters.

This Administration is going to need some more place-settings! Bull-in-a-china-shop........

Yeah, I called that one from the start.

Both know that the other is a loose cannon they cant control and Un has to work with CHina and SK for what he wants (yeah, we factor into the SK side)...and doesnt need us. And h e probably doesnt want Trump to get the credit...Un wants to look like the great peacemaker.

Of course, we're not going to alter our nuke program.

What am I going to do with all my Trump and "Supreme Leader" summit coins?

trump_kim_coin.jpg

eBay!

Yup. We should have pulled Obama out of retirement and sent him over there to “Git ‘er done!”

That would be a great press conference:

Dear Americans I'm pleased to announce after long negotiations I've agreed to allow NK to cross the DMZ and unite as one unified communist country. I also agreed to allow nucular testing to continue with their promise to be good. I'm also pleased to announce in return for these concessions I've received a shiny button and bag of magic beans.

Then watch all stations but FOX praise the deal as the right choice for America.

FOX would be saying how smart trump is

Not quite... Kim just played himself. Trump cancelled the meeting.

Kim apologists, please do carry on with the revisionism....

Un cant pull out, he's got China and SK to deal with (altho he could pointedly uninvite Trump....and that's what Trump wanted to avoid.)

To try and save face, Trump quit first.

Anyone with more than a handful of brain cells realized that Kim was not going to denuclearize. Mercy, how many Norko's starved to death so Kim & Co. could get their nukes?

Kim would have demanded every concession short of the 7th Fleet and maybe that also. Trump, in all his grandiosity, didn't seem able to grasp these basic truisms.

He's not even leading from behind. Torching our international treaties and foreign policy with no better options is not leading at all.

Who would have thought denuclearization was so hard? I'm sure Kim Jong-un will be crushed that he won't receive his Commemorative Coin and the Moron's Peace Prize was in the bag too, how sad.

:lamo Inorite?

Yeah, about that...

Nobody likes to be humiliated. We all want to "save face."

That said, trump canceled the summit immediately after NoKo publicly destroyed their nuclear reactor in front of reporters. Asians have a take on "saving face" that far exceeds our own.

Trump failed again.

Enough of your stupid bull****.

Those medals are going to make great gag gifts in the future tho....presented for failures.

That's it! A Darwin award for failure.

I’m wondering what Trump is going to do with ZTE? The single benefit of them existing was to use them as leverage on China.

This is not good for China, and could possibly signal to other leaders that Trump is unreliable and cannot be counted on. It's also another blow to our international relations and credibility

Not sure what you mean about consequences but with the collapse of their underground testing facility, Un has major problems maintaining or expanding his nuke program. And China seems to be weighing in on that.

Kim has been rolling Trump all along, but Trump was too vainglorious (Nobel etc) to admit the grim truth.

Never has a poster in DP been so consistently wrong about everything.

Trump walked away from the negotiations because Kim was trying to play him. He did the right thing. He left the door open for Kim, but if Kim doesn't come back with a counter offer then there was nothing there in the first place, and it's always better to see that clearly. Negotiation takes two willing parties and a modicum of good will.

Without the ability to walk away you get the kind of disaster we got when Iran played Obama.

Do you really think that every other country on the planet doesnt already think that?

I'm serious. That's been his trademark so far and Trump is (blindly) proudly building on that reputation.

I don't know what consequences I mean either, but if I have the facts straight then Un was humiliated today, and there will be consequences.

And Un wasn't the only person trump humiliated. President Moon left Washington DC yesterday with Trump's assurance that the summit will move forward. Moon brought that assurance back to South Korea with him and learned along with the rest of us that trump had no intention of attending the summit.

So Moon was humiliated, Un was humiliated and trump's word is now worth precisely nothing. Everybody loses today.

Well, everybody but Putin.

Well it will be interesting then.

If the whole deal was not derailed the instant Trump took the meeting in the way that he took the meeting it was surely derailed at the point when he took KJU's exact words "committing to the goal of denuclearization" and turned that into "KJU has agreed to denuclearize." Either KJU knows more about how to use what is a second language for him, English than Trump or Trump simply way overplayed a hand that was not that strong in the first place.

We are going to end up with a convoluted sanctions effort vis-s-vis N.K. and a convoluted sanctions effort with regard to Iran because of the way Trump has handled both countries. Those convoluted sanctions efforts to go along with our convoluted tariffs effort is going to make it impossible for US corporate interests to make headway. We are going to end up with secondary sanctions here and primary sanctions there with American companies and European Companies and Asian companies trying to figure out where they can go and when.

Trump appears to be relying on having made them fat with cash through the tax bill as the great mitigator of the rest of his nonsense and it won't be. It won't be because big, business, real business which Trump knows nothing about received benefits across the board, benefits for all of them. So competitively they really did not advance one over the other. However Trump's convoluted tariffs and sanctions will benefit one over the other and you simply cannot bring in one company at a time and adjust a few levers for that company and bring in another company and adjust a few for that company just as you cannot do it with countries. It just does not work!

IMO, Trump's wacky Foreign Policy (read non-existent) is going to vector with his wacky economic and trade policies (read non-existent) with the whole thing turning decidedly negative by 2020, just in time for his wacky immigration policy to collide with the massive exposed corruption of his administration and assorted cronies.

He is going to do trade talks with China next, and he just stabbed Moon in the back. I understand some decided to give Trump, the wild card a chance over Hillary, but his inexperience and antics could actually hurt America for decades.

This is different from Trump's previous actions like backing out of prior international agreements. Moon was counting on Trump to create, important and historic policy. This was a huge international failure on Trump's part, and signals he can't "close deals" or enforce previous.

Its very sad. I just wonder about his trade talks with China.

He's a loose cannon and I believe every nation understands this and realizes it cannot depend on him for anything.

Unfortunately, now Moon knows it but this doesnt mean that Trump cant support Moon's dealings with Un.
