Emily Badger & Nate Cohn @ NYT postulate that Donald Trump's Presidency is giving white people the confidence to view themselves as having a unique identity of their own! Oh noes! How can we stop this? Should white people be encouraged to view themselves as lacking an identity, and is a unique identity which contains an element of racial identity something that only minorities should be encouraged to possess?

According to popular opinion from those of the same ilk as the NYT authors, whites aren't entitled to a group identity, if that identity includes anything that stems from race. I'm sure whites also shouldn't be allowed group identity based upon nationality either, as that seems to constitute nationalism.

But regarding the present, they aren't permitted to view themselves as being a distinct group, unless it's for the purpose of collective guilt. That is not indicative of possessing privilege my friend, quite the opposite.
 

Sounds like Republicans have given up trying to disguise their headlong embrace of identity politics.

Permitted by who? Whites are still a group and overwhelming are seen as the "default". Even if that is "changing", it is still just "changing", not "changed".

I am white, but Italian-American. I meet another Italian guy and may say ‘Ay paisan’. That’s viewing my self as a distinctive group. But generally most of us white folks are all mixed up, hence the lack of identity politics on our side.

Never been stopped by a cop for driving while white or driving while Italian, tho was stopped and almost shot by plainclothes cops for driving while Puerto Rican. I dislike the term white privilege, but when I am considered non-Hispanic white, I recognize the advantage that comes with it. A focus on identity, however overblown at times, is most often what follows powerlessness or oppression. No need to say “black is beautiful” as folks started to in the 1960s, if that hadn’t been preceded by “black is ugly” for 100+ years.

He may have been victimized by the fact that certain minorities have claimed certain identities to stand out against the "go back to your country" types. Don't downplay anyone's misery.

Ethnocentrism for me, but not for thee.

Non-Hispanic whites will officially be a minority in the US by 2045, and evidence may suggest that their psychological state is changing to prepare for this coming reality. I don't deny anyone the right to self-identity, unlike you.

Look, there are only two outcomes here

- self-identity which includes race = guilty of white supremacist ideals
- self-identity which doesn't include race = not guilty of white supremacist ideals

Those are the choices laid out for whites.

Whites are seen as the default when you wish to complain about systemic racism, but never for any positive purposes which would credit the 'default' with advancing civilization.

'Changed' is the goal. As another writer at NYT wrote, 'we can replace them'.

Democrats have based their entire growth strategy on identity politics for several decades. Now that a segment of GOP voters appear to be following in your footsteps, you've finally found a branch of identity politics that you can't embrace :lamo

Who do you think the target demo was for cultural relativism, 'race is a social construct', the theories of white privilege and white fragility, white guilt, etc, etc, etc? Hint: no one from a 'legitimate identity group' was expected to buy into such crap.

Identity politics came with the civil rights movement as a natural consequence of the desire to promote pride against racism and discrimination. The white identity politics today is more about keeping racism and discrimination. in place.
