Here's an interesting NYT article describing a study finding that white grievance led to the Capitol riot. The indicator, like a beacon in the fog, identifies counties with declining white populations as those most likely to produce insurrectionists.

Fears of White People Losing Out Permeate Capitol Rioters’ Towns, Study Finds

So much for the theory that economic angst gave us Trumpism. It was just racism....like we said all along.

Most of the people who took part in the assault came from places, his polling and demographic data showed, that were awash in fears that the rights of minorities and immigrants were crowding out the rights of white people in American politics and culture.

Did we really need a study to prove the obvious?

...the study would appear to connect Jan. 6 not only to the once-fringe right-wing theory called the Great Replacement, which holds that minorities and immigrants are seeking to take over the country, but also to events like the far-right rally in Charlottesville, Va., in 2017 where crowds of white men marched with torches chanting, “Jews will not replace us!”

“If you look back in history, there has always been a series of far-right extremist movements responding to new waves of immigration to the United States or to movements for civil rights by minority groups,”

Well, considering the tendency for Trumpers to gaslight, we probably did. Here's something else to consider as you look upon your fellow middle class and upper-middle class overly anxious white neighbor waving a Trump flag.

...90 percent of the “ordinary” rioters are part of a still congealing mass movement on the right that has shown itself willing to put “violence at its core.”

White-wing extremists are terrified of losing their monopoly on power. That's why they're all in with fascism, trump, insurrections, guns, and so on.

What they don't realize is that they are making the inevitable change much, much harder on themselves. When the change comes, and it will come, they will only have themselves to blame for their extreme butthurt.

And which party do those people tend to belong to, and which outlets do they tend to get their information from?

The Republican Party as a whole has a lot to answer for when it comes to spreading propaganda to amplify fear and a feeling of marginalization among conservatives in order to attempt to retain minority control and defy democracy.

Yep, the key is that these were reasonably comfortable whites, not the downtrodden by any stretch. Like in days past, those with much will kill to keep those with nothing from ever gaining power.

Does that include the rioters that are destroying Portland???

Actually, yes. Have you never seen the color scheme up in the Pacific NW US?

Maybe not. Right?

So the Portland rioters are white racists too?

"White and mad." You need to pay better attention to what is written.

Was this a serious question? The riots in Portland are as related to the Capitol riots as they are to the riots in Myanmar. In other words: They are unrelated. They are completely different events with completely different purposes and completely different participants with completely different motives.

The OP is about the makeup and motives of the rioters at the Capitol, no one else.

I did. You called them racists. Are you pretending now that you didnt?

Funny how there were hundreds of riots in 2020 that caused multiple deaths, injuries and billions in property damage, but the NYT Times only saw fit to do an analysis of just one of them.

Yeah, that "just one of them" happened to be inside the US Capitol. Maybe you didn't know that.

Read what you quoted. Then get back to me....if you dare.

They didn't just analyze one. They did an analysis of the Ferguson riots as well and came to the conclusion that they were composed mostly of disadvantaged minorities reacting to systemic racism in police departments and police brutality.

Asinine article by the failing NYTimes. Someone needs to shutter the old gray lady. More than a half million Trump supporters went to DC to support Trumps effort to see the contested election fairly adjudicated. A few of those "rioted" when Pence's letter was released. ANTIFA also had permits for a rally that day, a few also participating in the "riot". A "riot" that was over befor dark. No looting, no pillaging, no arson. No insurrection.

Yes, the people in Ferguson had a legitimate grievance, even though Michael Brown made a crummy martyr. The PD there targeted blacks, as was concluded by the investigation.

There was looting, pillaging, and murder. And it was an attempted insurrection to stop the counting of electoral votes and install Trump as an unelected president. And the only reason it was over before dark is because it was INSIDE THE ****ING CAPITOL BUILDING.

Black and mad then.

Which other riot tried to disrupt the peaceful transfer of federal power?
