Back in the day when I still drank alcohol...when I lived in Germany...I was partial to a good, medium-sweet Spätlese Riesling.A general question
Back in the day, when my ex and I had a wine cellar, my favorite big reds, ones that I could "lay down", were a Cabaret Sauvignon by a small California vintner Freemark Abbey, and some long legged red Zinfandels by Ridge Vinyards, and Nalle winery from the Lytton Springs properties.A general question
Layer Cake Syrah.A general question
We used to love a cold bottle of Gewürztraminer with Asian food. Somehow the usual reds and whites couldn't pair quite as well with it - not even the sparkling wines. My favourite is Gewürztraminer
the Gold.tröpfchen is well knownThoughts on Piesporter wines?
I was at a fancy-pants restaurant in St. John's for a multi-course meal. Before each course the sommelier recommended a pairing.I have never met a wine I liked. I don't know if that's because I have never found a good wine, or my palette is just incomprehensible to it. I do get a bit envious upon hearing the delight that this pairs with that or the other thing. Sometimes I tell myself it's just the snobbery and nobody really likes it, and sometimes I get FOMO and try it again, only to be met with the familiar disappointment.
How is your sense of smell? I ask because I used to enjoy wine for many decades. My Ex and I had a modest cellar with a little over 100 bottles in it. But about 5 years ago my sense of smell just fell off a cliff, and the attraction for it just isn't there anymore. Admittedly, it's a tradeoff. I'd love to have my olfactory sense return, but losing it has saved me a fortune I don't have.I have never met a wine I liked. I remember them from decades ago. Very competent viniculture for the price point. They made some really nice sparkling wine too, as I recall.I have always preferred a chilled Riesling. Give me a bottle of inexpensive Chateau Ste. Michelle, a Columbia Valley, Washington brand, and I’m fine.
Neither of my sons drink. It makes me suspicious of their mother... but, then, she drinks more than I do, so...I have never met a wine I liked. A good sommelier can do that to you.We ended up trying wines that I would never have chosen myself and I learned to broaden my horizons a bit.
