Yep I agree! Diet is definitely a big factor too. I know the south has a lot of delicious fried foods. I was about 20 pounds heavier when I lived in Austin, just from eating barbecue and Mexican. It's easier to eat healthy in places like SF.

I don't know if we're the lowest, but we're definitely less obese than most states. SF has a lot of vegan / hippie types, and LA has a lot of surfers and douchey gym rats.

Weird. I always think of LA County as having the most beautiful people in America. Aspiring movie stars and whatnot.

Well I don’t know where you live, maybe it’s biased because I live in a city that’s heavily Hispanic, not that I am saying that they’re ugly (I am engaged to a Hispanic lady) or that all or even most of them are fat, but because of how expensive LA is most of them do nothing but work and eat bad food and it’s hard to get out of that habit. It’s certainly not gym rats where I live.

it’s largely sugar and carbs, fried foods are part of the problem, but If you look in the south coke is really big, fried foods are big, sugary deserts are big, and since food has gotten way cheaper since the 19th century people who otherwise would eat less of this food and labor in the fields now sit in vehicles and gorge. It’s the same with Mexicans, their partial Indian ancestry plus abundance of sugar can hurt them. Go look at the nutrition facts on the Gansitos and Jarittos soda and compare it to coke if you ever want to be horrified.

You correct California is NOT the least obese state. It ranks 4th in lowest rate of obesity. You are only offering anecdotal evidence in your claim. Because you see lots of obese people does not mean there aren't more states where obesity is even more prevalent. America is among the more obese countries in the world (12th). We got them everywhere, even in California.

I don’t think anecdotes should be ignored though. Many studies contain biases based on who’s compiling the data, how they compiled it, etc.

You've mentioned "the south" in two posts. TX, FL, GA, and NC are home to 70 million U.S. residents and do not seem to have levels of obesity compared to the states with highest levels. In fact, "the south" should not be confused with the red states featured on the CDC obesity map.
