What's the difference between conservative and very conservative?

"Why do individuals like controlling others through the government."

My response, "because they don't like being shot."

"Why are people so ignorant?"

My response, "Okay, since we've been brainwashed by the media; explain how wrong the Scottish Enlightenment is."

Simple, eh?

Makes no sense. I wasn't talking about guns and don't give a damn about Scotland. Notice my avatar.

Since you clearly have no idea what you're talking about, I'll help you out. Now, I could go into a long-winded explanation but it would be one explanation that you'd ignore. So, for your sanity and mine, I'll keep this short.

The main reason people adore the state, is because it provides security. In Hobbes' Leviathan he basically summarized the creation of the state as this.

Society A exists, yet Society A breaks into two opposite segments. Society A1 and Society A2; Society A1 later hits Society A2. Then, Society A2 hits back. In an attempt to provide stability, so that Society A1 doesn't keep hitting Society A2 and vice versa until everyone is dead, the State is created who will hit anyone who hits another part of Society. In effect, having a monopoly on force.

As for "not caring about Scotland," well, that's a tad pathetic.

Among the outstanding Scottish thinkers and scientists of the period were Francis Hutcheson, Alexander Campbell, David Hume, Adam Smith, Thomas Reid, Robert Burns, Adam Ferguson, John Playfair, Joseph Black and James Hutton.

Please tell me at least half of them ring a bell?

Education, it's a wonderful thing.

I was specifically referencing 3-4 issues in THE UNITED STATES. The poster above you noticed. Nice attempt to declare I don't know what I'm talking about. Your entire post is negligible in this thread.

It wasn't meant as a "control others guns" post. Everyone owns a gun here in the States.

It also wasn't meant as a "people like gov't because they feel secure, yada, yada, yada, free healthcare!, yada, yada, yada, mediocre Euro countries!, yada, yada" post.

It was directed towards these issues: 1. Drugs 2. Prostitution 3. Gambling 4. Bible-thumpers.

Gratuitous Scottish philosophy need not apply.

1. Drugs: people feel that excess drug legalization will lead to a quasi-narco lawless state; a security issue.

2. Prostitution: people feel that excess prostitution legalization will lead to a lawless state; a security issue.

3. Gambling: people feel that excess gambling legalization will lead to a lawless state; a security issue.

It all comes down to security. Saying that we're not talking about guns, misses the point that we're talking about law and order. Regardless of what particular issue that wider concept involves, you cannot dismiss its fundamentals.

Bible... Thumpers...?

Adam Smith? Not relevant to America? Locke? Irrelevant?

Anyone that wants to control the lives of others via the government is dumb. Just don't understand why some folks are like that.

Some people's definition of control is not the same as yours. Does that help?

What do you see as the differences between someone who leans "conservative" and another who leans "very conservative"?

Pretty much that the conservative is actually conservative and the "very conservative" just confuses being dickish and boorish with being conservative.

I feel the same way about liberals and "very liberals".

Most conservatives have a reasonable amount of brains.
Very conservative means that they have had 2/3 of their brains removed....:2razz:

a conservative may be in agreement with other things, maybe a bit more socially "liberal" or perhaps just not an asswipe about it. Very conservative tends to be militant, fascist, authoritative type. They'll excuse any war and expansion of government and tend to call absolutely everyone else "liberal". They also tend to be asswipes.

Degree of inbreeding.
