What do you see as the differences between someone who leans "conservative" and another who leans "very conservative"?

One considers the other a ****ing liberal.

The answer .... should be obvious .... my liberal friend!!!!!!!!

Judging by this forum, generally the people who say they are 'very conservative' are more combative about their views.

So it has nothing do with what their views are, only how they debate?

Judging from what I've seen here, they hold extremely similar views. The people who call themselves very conservative just seem to have stronger feelings about them.

People pick their own lean, so if they choose "very conservative" that is how they view themself. Whether it has anything to do with actual policy positions depends on the individual.

Probably in most cases, "very conservative" means both fiscally and socially conservative as an ideological and positional stance.

It's just a self-chosen label, I wouldn't read too much into it.

For instance, I chose Independent, because I am a libertarian-ish conservative Christian with a few atypical positions, when I'm not busy wrangling goats or raising teenagers (except when I'm a revolutionary individualist, which is on alternate Fridays).

Very conservative = nutjobs who think God should still be in our pledge and motto. They also believe in prohibiting homosexuals the right to marry, women to practice prostitution, and folks to gamble because a thousand-year-old book edited by Thomas Aquinas and a slew of others says so.

Feel free to correct that assertion if it's incorrect.

I'm impressed. Based on your posts to date, you seem determined to piss off or alienate everyone at DP in record time.

Been here before?

Edited to add: on second thought, you have been smacking Misterman around, which is a trait I find endearing.

Huh? Explain, please. Or are you just joking?

I will add that ‘very conservative’ carries the additional connotation at least for me that they would rather see this country fail than succeed under what they consider to be Liberal policies; i.e., the conservative philosophy is more important than America's continued success or existence for that matter. In other words, they are extremists.

Mere ‘conservative’ people would dispute the success, say their policies would have achieved even more success, or, even taken credit for moderating said Liberal policies and thereby brought about the success, but, they would never wish for failure simply because the policies were Liberal in any way.

You do realize that a majority of Americans support ALL of those things? (With the possible exception of the last, but probably even that.)

Anyone that wants to control the lives of others via government is dumb. Just don't understand why some folks are like that.

Because they don't like being shot?

I know you're the only one here who hasn't been deceived by The "Lame-Stream" Media, but please, what's wrong with the Scottish Enlightenment?

Some people believe that changing the legal defintion of marriage to accomodate gays would have negative effects in our current system, where litigation over any slightest percieved "injustice" is so commonplace. For instance, if gay marriage is made the law of the land, how long before someone sues the Roman Catholic Church for refusing to marry them as a gay couple?

If we lived in a libertarian system, that would be different; libertarian systems do not normally allow for such nonsense as forced association.

As for gambling... well, I'm more or less pro-legalization on drugs, and largely indifferent to gambling, because I'm not much on the idea of gov't protecting people from their own informed bad choices. (ie non-fraud). However I can understand why many feel that way; I've seen enough families destroyed by drug habits and gambling habits to have some sympathy with the viewpoint of making/keeping them illegal.

People who disagree with you are not necessarily stupid; usually it is because their thinking on a given matter is operating from a different paradigm.

What are you talking about it in both of those sentences?

"Why do individuals like controlling others through the government."

My response, "because they don't like being shot."

"Why are people so ignorant?"

My response, "Okay, since we've been brainwashed by the media; explain how wrong the Scottish Enlightenment is."

Simple, eh?
