I saw your later post where you yelled at juicing naysayers and was about to yell back, but I had the tact to retrace your posts and catch the bolded. Generally speaking, I never bought into the juicing hype, my rationale being "why not just eat the whole damn thing?". Most modern amenities and lifestyle innovations vex me quite a bit, as I regard them superfluous and effete. That being said, I can see some validity in that theory. As we grow older, our bodies grow inefficient, benefiting from any help unburdening them.
ah, thanks for the backtrack...

another reason for the morbidly obese to juice instead of blend is to allow the digest track to heal...they have brutalized their body and need as much nutrient as fast as possible with the least amount of energy expended on the digestive process

their organs desperately need to heal

I completely agree...get away from processed...in Europe it is much easier to eat in a healthy manner

sugar is poison especially the corn syrup crap they put in everything processed

I am addicted to sugar, I love dessert so I have to limit it carefully

one of the big nature sugars they push now is maple syrup that is easy for me to get eh...lol

Pure maple syrup is of course heavily processed but it is certainly preferable to refined sugars. And I agree, the high fructose corn syrup that the food industry seems to infuse into just about everything is an abomination. So we have an increasingly unhealthy society addicted to processed foods, refined sugars and flours, way too much salt, and way too much dependence on colas, sports drinks, etc. for hydration and too little use of water.

Raw, unrefined honey is my go to for sweeteners whenever possible--I have a huge sweet tooth too. But I find that if I eliminate processed sugars from my diet as well as the artificial sweeteners, I don't crave sweets and in between meal munchies nearly as much. If I do find myself wanting something, a little butter and honey on a piece of wheat bread generally knocks down the craving. Again I am not a fanatic about it and occasionally enjoy indulging in something really decadent, but this is a sometimes thing and not every day or even several times a week.

no maple syrup isn't highly processed...we run it right out of the trees into buckets and boil it down....best stuff for you (buy the canned stuff)

I agree with you that the less processed sugar you eat, the less you crave it...I am addicted to it...I have to be careful

one summer, I juiced everyday for lunch...it cleared my system so well I had no cravings....best my body ever felt...very time consuming though

when I am off again for a whole summer, I will get into it again

If you're wanting to build muscle it is very hard to get all your protein needs, from food alone.

I discovered from personal experience that we tend to way underestimate how much protein it takes to have big gains. The 70 grams that the fda recommends is just a minimum to stay healthy, the 1 gram per kilo of bodyweight that many athletes shoot for is also too low for maximum muscle gains, someone serious about gaining muscle mass really needs 300+ grams and I've read that top level pro competitive bodybuilders shoot for 400+ grams. Yea, even 200 grams can be difficult for someone who isn't a huge meat eater, 300 grams definitely requires protein suppliments, and I can't imagine eating 400+ grams.

The only protein suppliments I take are whey protein powder, meat and egg whites, but I consider all of that food.

I guess the most frustrating thing about trying to increase protein consumption is the farts. Protein farts are terrible, I can clear out a good size room in a matter of seconds. Of course that can also be an (embarrising) advantage at a crowded gym. I pretty much can walk up the the bench press racks, let one rip, and have my choice of which rack to use.

You're probably right though I consider boiling the sap down to a small fraction of itself to make the syrup the processing part. Whether this affects any nutrient value in the syrup, I don't honestly know. The honey I buy comes right out of the bees and is squeezed out of the comb but otherwise is not processed in any way. So is honey healthier than maple syrup? So far as knocking out my allergies, it is for me. Honey has B6 and Vitamin C that maple syrup does not and honey has much more riboflavin than maple syrup and natural flouride. And you need a tad less honey than maple syrup to get the same amount of sweetening but I don't really see that as an issue. On the other hand, maple syrup has a lot of minerals that honey doesn't have so it could be a wash in nutritional value. I love both. :)

I'm there with ya.... they say for allergies, local honey because of the pollen...helps to build our immune system

now if we could just make butter cream icing out of this stuff...

Greetings, JC. :2wave:

One thing that you might consider are chia seeds. They are great for "sustainable strength" and in your line of work, they might be useful. They have more Omega3 than salmon, and a calcium that is more beneficial than milk for people that are lactose intolerant, among other benefits. They really have very little taste that would interfere with things they are eaten with, so they can be put in smoothies, sprinkled on cereal, and I also use them in baking for all the health benefits they offer. My youngest daughter has a Masters in Nutrition, so I listen to what she recommends. Check them out if you're interested!

I bought the chia seeds today, thanks again for the tip! :)

There is indeed that. I have a lot of cake, cookie, etc. recipes in which the only sweetening agent is honey, but I've never figured out how to make a decent frosting out of it.

We're nearly the same age. I take a pill stack of multi vit/omega 3/vit C and a few others. I train hard cycling and weights. I eat relatively healthy. I adhere to the theory it is very difficult to get ALL the vits and nutrients needed to maintain a healthy body, through food alone, so I supplement. My diet is supplemented with extra whey protein.

I agree. You have to find a place to get quality, reasonable price (preferably) whole foods and then hope you have the appetite every day to eat enough of everything you need. I'm not that dedicated yet, but it's something to work towards I guess.

I am a cake girl...I could live on cake with frosting...not thick frosting but mmmmmmmmmmmmm heaven with a thin coating

Me too but I have to be realistic. I am one that constantly fights the battle of the bulge and I have almost no will power to stay hungry, so I have to eat to keep the hungries under control. Otherwise I'll be foraging for whatever I can find to eat all the time. By eliminating most sweets other than what I sweeten with honey, I don't have those cravings. I have no clue if my system would work for everybody, but it does work for me.

whatever works for you, stick with it... many find no system that works for them and just continue to bulk up

Most people who regularly use chia seeds also see high cholesterol drop to normal.

Great! I just heard of them recently, I'm surprised I didn't know about them before. I was doing flax seeds for a while, but not properly...just taking a tablespoon and putting it in a protein shake every couple of days. I may try your flax seed/oil combo after the chia seeds to see if there's a difference.

My flax oil/flax seed plus honey and fruit smoothie is one way to do it. But if you don't want to bother with the smoothie, just grind a couple of tablespoons of flax seed until fluffy--just takes a few seconds in my coffee grinder--and dump in your cereal or salad or whatever. But do grind them within 20 minutes or so of consuming them as the ground seed goes rancid very quickly. The freshly ground seed has very little taste and won't overpower anything else. Keep your whole seeds in the fridge. Keep an unopened package of seed in the freezer.

Thanks! Btw, do you mind if I ask what AlbqOwl means? And do you have many owls in New Mexico?

Well the Albq of course is Albuquerque. Many decades ago when my hubby and I married, somebody gave us a little ceramic bank consisting of two owls cuddled up together. Sometime that same year, I acquired a second owl figurine. Two is a collection right? So for all these years people have been giving me owls--figurines, paintings, wall hangings, cookie jar, you name it. And somewhere in all that I became interested in owls themselves. . .and. . .well, you understand? :) But yes, there are a lot of owls almost everywhere. I grew up in New Mexico, married in Texas, we've lived several places in both states plus Kansas and West Virginia, and there have been owls everywhere. But mainly here in New Mexico. Lots of them.

Oh yeah, Albuquerque! I like owls and wish I could see more of them here in Michigan but have only seen one in the wild, and it was at my friends house sleeping on his window sill...a little one. It was beautiful. Hawks are real common around here.

I'm sure Michigan has lots of owls too, but most are nocturnal birds so it is not easy to see them in the wild. But not so much in the city, but when we lived in the mountains that abut Albuquerque, you had to be really careful letting small dogs, kittens, or even small cats out at night. The owls would get them. And in the daytime it would be the hawks and golden eagles they had to watch out for. We sure grew some great strawberries and blackberries up there though if we could get to them before the bears did.

Almost any kind of fresh berries, especially blueberries, are really good to add to any healthy eating regime by the way. :)

Wow, Bears too! Pretty exciting! We get a lot of deer and an occasional fox or coyote. I saw a bunch of eagles down in Sandusky Bay in Ohio, but we don't have any up here. And yes, I'm about to have yogurt with fresh strawberries right now! I try to eat them as much as possible but they're pretty expensive up here when they're not in season. Blueberries are just on the verge of being out of season, but I've had a lot of those the past few months.
