My purpose right now is to make sure my daughters have every advantage in life, but I'm 42.
My purpose at 17 when my parents left my dorm room in Austin was to outgrow my stupidity before it killed me or left me homeless.
My purpose in 13 years will be to do as little as possible.

From a biological perspective, the only actual purpose any of us have is ensuring the survival of the species.

Think about THAT statement VERY VERY carefully. How does one go about ensuring the survival of the species? Then ask yourself if you are contributing to that survival.

The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose in life is to give it away.

Other

Avoid pain and poverty. Harder with age

If you believe you were created or whether you believe life is just biological, at some point (I would hope) we still have to ask ourselves what is our purpose in life.

Yes, to find love and have kids and become successful. Those are the pat answers. Others DO find other purposes. They BELIEVE they are put on the Earth to spread their religion. Others believe their purpose is to improve the lives of others. Yet, and no names need to be mentioned, others believe their purpose is accumulate stuff and wealth.

So, while the poll above can't include every purpose, I listed some purposes, but also offered "other" so you don't have to feel excluded if your purpose in life is missing.

Hi Snowflake,

Yes, I thought about it too. But I do not think there is a purpose in life. I do think you can create purpose though. But nothing superficial. No deeper meaning.

the older I get the more interesting questions like this become

could it be my purpose was for my kids to be born, and then their kids will be someone who changes the world forever? could it simply be my soul and how I will praise/worships God when I die? could it be nothing - we're all just animals (do whatever you want to because there is no afterlife)

We've done our part. We've had two children to replace us. Someone could argue we need a third in case one of our girls doesn't have kids, but one is in middle school and one is starting high school in August. Starting from the beginning sounds like a terrible idea.

Some could argue we have more than enough "replacements." We are quite populous after all.

If you think about the long term scope of things, given that our existence is literally a blink of an eye in geological, or even historical time, it changes perspective.

I mean, the only real long term purpose in life is to have offspring, or to maintain someone else's offspring, given that ten thousand years or so into the future, its likely we will have no impact upon the universe except for propagating our genetic material onward. Everything else would be fleeting at best.

Hi Cat,

Wouldn't that be a consequence instead of a purpose?

Joey

depends on if you believe in predestination etc

was Mary's entire purpose in life to give birth to Jesus ? was Einstein's mom's entire purpose to give birth to him ?

Hi Cat,

No believing on my end. That's for religious people.

6. Morality Comes from Matter

Hi Cat,

No idea what you are referring to, but let me explain something to you. If I say that I do not believe, than that actually means that I do not believe.

I see you give a reference to a website about religion. That's rather odd and seems to display a conflict of interest, but that's just on the surface. No clue what's behind it, and no intention of finding out.

And just for the fun of it, let me comment on: '2. Order Comes from Chaos' Entropy explains exactly why this statement is incorrect. Everything will always evolve into chaos eventually. Order is a naturally unstable state.

Also, todays meaning of the word 'miracle' is rooted in religion. I would not typically use that word. I leave that for the religious among us.

Hi Cat,

Well, if that's how you define an atheist, than I am not an atheist to you of course. Let me know when you figured out what I am to you.

I voted other because I'm really not sure. I try to help others whenever I can but I also worry about myself and my family first. I believe everyone has a different purpose that only God knows.

So you can't define your own purpose?

I chose #7. I don't think about purpose, I cherish every moment of life, not live in the past or worry too much about the future. I respect and enjoy nature and try to support all wild life, plant life and ocean life, etc. I do this because it comes naturally, and I've been blessed to share my life with those I share love and kindness with, man and animals.

My purpose is to promote British cheese on here.

It's fantastic and you should all buy as much as you can.
