Nick Kristof is no conservative. But even he realizes that when Portland takes money out of the tight education budget to place tampon dispensers in the boy's kindergarten bathrooms!, then somehow left coast culture has become very broken, even as it remains an economic stronghold.

This is why Gavin Newsom will never be president.

  • Democratic strongholds like Portland face significant issues with homelessness, crime, and governance despite ideological alignment.
  • Despite shortcomings, Democratic states on the West Coast generally outperform Republican states in economic growth and education.
  • Journalist Nicholas Kristof argues for a shift from ideological purity to pragmatic governance to address pressing issues in liberal-led cities.

I was wondering when this was going to show up here 🍿

Idk, turned it into one of the most economical productive regions in the history of Earth, responsible for a large share of the current world GDP alone?

WWII boosted GDP too. Not necessarily a good thing. I suppose taking care of the dysfunctional and downtrodden can be considered a jobs engine but I believe we're all better off if they learn how to take care of themselves and become productive members of society.

California has a high rate of new business startups and is the largest net giver instead of taker of taxes to the government.

And has been longer than I've been alive.

It isn't like they went into some temporary war economy to artificially boost GDP.

Sounds good.
Are any details of your plan available at this time?

Gavin Newsom is the Governor of California.
I didn't realize that Portland was governed by California, or maybe you've just temporarily skipped out on the social studies class they keep talking about?
Hopefully your problem is just temporary. I guess we'll see.

Agreed that tampon dispensers in a boy's kindgarten bathroom is silly but then again, how much of a budget are we talking about?
Are tampon dispensers million dollar items? Are we sure this wasn't just a bureaucratic mixup, like when a bank accidentally misplaces a decimal point and then corrects the error when they realize one of their depositors is suddenly a billionaire.
You haven't convinced me of some imaginary fifth column invasion of radical marxists.

You've convinced me that in your zeal to bash Commiefornia, that you think Gavin Newsom is governor of Portland and that a handful of tampon dispensers made Oregon go broke.

Obviously the incident issue is a sign of the complete insanity of the west coast, as the use of tampon money will break the school system Or it’s merely a “tampon in a teapot” attempt to grasp at some flaw to make some unnecessary point. Kristof’s column is setting up a bit of a straw man to form the, oh, ten millionth poke at the silliness of some political correctness.

Then you should be in favor of all Americans getting off to an equally as strong start right? My bold added.

"In real life we cannot disentangle black and Hispanic children’s race and ethnicity from the contexts in which they live, which put them at a major disadvantage relative to their average white and Asian peers. It is not race itself, then, but the poverty and other things that too often go along with being a minority child in America, that compound disadvantage. In addition to the high odds of living in poverty (as do 46 percent of black and 63 percent of non-English speaking Hispanic children), these disadvantages include living with one parent (as do 65 percent of black children), and lacking access to preschool (as do 53 percent of Hispanic children, compared with only 40 percent of white children and less than 40 percent of Asian children).

America should have universal free childcare and preschool. Agree?

It turned into that despite, not because of the performative woke idiots running things.

It is also turning into a craphole. That one is because of the performative woke idiots

"We need to get our act together. Less purity and more pragmatism would go a long way. But perhaps the first step must be the humility to acknowledge our failures."

Good points all around, but esp. that last sentence. The first side in this tribalist quagmire to embrace it, drop the whataboutism, and face the challenges in their own camp with a merciless objectivity and reason will be the first to do real good for the people.

The tampons for kindergartener boys program is a single data point of how far the insanity has progressed. There are literally thousands more. Many in the article you obviously did not bother to read.

Personally, I think they are responsible for both the prolific growth and the epic mismanagement of said wealth.

If you don't think the woke idiots are responsible for a state having a GDP higher than almost any other country, then who is?

You act as if political correctness is the exclusive province of the left. There is plenty of silliness on both sides. Right now it is not politically correct to criticize Trump in many republican circles.

Well, California is 60% lefty and 40% rightie. I think it's not unreasonable to assuming the prolific growth is a combination of both. Especially when you consider that engineers tend to be more than 50% conservative.

OTOH, the state government is supermajority lefty. So the mismanagement is all on them. The right has no voice in that at all.

And Oregon and Washington have the worst or both worlds. No phenomenal growth, just the epic mismanagement and tampons for 5 year old boys.

Seconds without a gratuitous Trump reference: 0

Trump is the I Ching of analogies, given his negative and crooked behavior on such a variety of topics, an almost infinite source. But ok, try this. We are forbidden to mention anything positive about Cuba, nothing of its history that might explain the phenomenon of Castro and communism. In the 1980s it was about Nicaragua, or the huge threat to the world that was Grenada. More recently, republicans wouldn’t dare say anything positive about the ACA. Each side has its language police.

Why...trump supporters, of course.
