What happens with the next pandemic?

I look around me and see our country becoming everyone out for themselves and to hell with the country or our neighbors., so how ready are we for the next pandemic? Will it go better then this one where we lost more than a million Americans and many are still living with the effects of the virus? I have a relative who refused the vaccines and got covid and fo the past ear or more has had severe problems that came from hving the virus. So if another round of a new and just as deadly virus comes, what will we do, treat it as many here have and DeSantis brags about not "givingi into" the "woke" left wingers and try to stop it? I hope we do more even if many conssideer doing anythig as woke.

After what I learned about human nature with this pandemic I honestly don’t give a shit what happens next time. A lot of people have shown that they’re nothing more than selfish assholes and at this point I give no ****s if anything happened to them.

I learned it was all a brainwash and control job.

You can easily see who the most affected are, they scream the loudest in lock step with the propaganda.

Everybody is talking like all our problems are over. Modern science and modern medicine have always told us that it takes 10 years to monitor side effects of human guinea pigs to make sure a vaccine is safe. We still have 7 more years to go. "I am Legend".
 
I remember reading The Coming Plague, and it was pointed out that the WHO and others had been warning about them since the late 1990s. The main drivers include antibiotic resistance, economic activity leading to incursion into wild areas as part of expanding real estate plus high levels of mobility as part of work, immigration, tourism, etc., and increased vectors for the spread of disease due to abnormal weather conditions and other effects of pollution, environmental damage, and climate change (such as the effect of abnormal weather on insect populations, flooding), etc.

One of my all-time favorite books. It's an excellent starting point, written to the layperson, for understanding epidemiology, still extremely relevant even tho written in the mid-90s (epidemiology history and basics dont really change). If you are interested in something more current, I highly recommend David Quammen's Spillover: Animal Infections and the Next Human Pandemic. Have you read it?

The way I see it is that most of us are hypocrites.
Of course we have the Trump sniffers who want their freedom and can't be bothered to do what is right. Just don't forget that a lot of lefties rather have the old right winger die out in favor of "progress".
I guess wishful thinking and accommodating go hand in hand.
Right? Caring about others only goes so far on both sides of the aisle.

Given how stupid people were with COVID and their inability to do the basics like wear a mask ... we're ****ed.
 
What happens in the next pandemic?

More people will die.

How large that number is will depend on what pathogen it is, how transmissible it is, and what the fatality rate is.

We got lucky that Covid only killed what, less than 1%.

Next time we may not be as lucky.

No. The entire globe is collateral damage.
 
If it's killing everyone kids/ grandkids, and everything else is the same, the right will join the left in trying to prevent transmission/ death and will scream if people aren't vaccinated.
 
Hopefully some destructive asshole politician won't make militantly ignoring science into a political position next time. As for the more useful people, the medical community will bravely put their asses on the line, and the scientific research community will go into overdrive trying to come up with a treatment. Again.
