What does a no soliciting sign mean?

So I am still working from home, and unlike my Wife, I will actually answer the door, (Outside security door).
I answer the door and a guy is out there with a clipboard and flyers, and he starts into his talk,
about how they are already in the area doing home repair for my neighbors.
I point up to the large no soliciting sign above my door, and he asks me, "What does that mean?"
Attempting to be polite and not too sarcastic, I tell him, it means that he in not supposed to ring my doorbell and attempt to sell me anything.
I would like to think his question was a bit sarcastic, but the look on his face told me it was a very real question.

It's possible that because the term is so often used to describe prostitution that the man didn't realize it applied to him.
Or he's dumb. Your pick.
 
When I was in door to door sales it meant you went to the back door...

Been there 100's of times. I have a sign on my walkway and front door.

I told one roofing solicitor that I couldn't possibly do business with a company that hires" illiterate ****s" like him after he and his associates knocked on my door for the 3rd time in a week.
 
Lots of Americans are very stupid. I'm not surprised that there are people who don't know what the definition of what 'soliciting is.

I still shake me head every time I see a truck hauling fuel and the sign says "flammable" when for over 200 years it was enough to properly have a warning sign which correctly read "inflammable" meaning able to easily burn, from the Latin inflammare. But since most Americans today are really stupid, they grew to believe the "in" part meant not able to burn, some correlation I guess to words like like incombustible as not able to burn. So now trucks and warnings have to all read 'flammable' so as not to confuse the vast numbers of functionally illiterate people.

But what should we expect here in America when schools have had to stop teaching cursive because kids can't read it, and teachers are now unwilling to teach it. Or when schools are now having to remove analog clocks and replace with digital clocks , because HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS don't know how to tell time on an analog clock.

Anyone in America who does not know the definition of soliciting should be blown off your front porch with a shotgun packed with rock salt. Maybe when that happens and gets reported, maybe then some people may begin to get educated.


Pretty lame when non English speakers here in America have one up on us, and still understand that the inflammable sign means dangerous.

Unless there is an ordinance against coming to your door, he has every right to do so. Good for him, and we admire his sales aggressiveness. It was an opportunity for you to be kind and make a difference, but you didn't take it?? Just my take on this situation.

Heh..."Not trying to be mean"...but I must say, the churchy folks around this town are quite aggressive, most of them anyway.
I don't mean physically, I just mean they are super duper hard sell and some of them seem to have difficulty taking NO for an answer.

you aren't even living in the Bible belt. Watch out on Sunday mornings. Folks coming out of church are nothing to be messed with, esp on the way to McDs.

I did live in the Buckle of the Bible Belt for thirteen years, only moved back to Southern California in 2012.
I know what you mean.

Years back, we displayed a MIA-POW flag along with the American flag out in the front of our house, and heard people walking past our house ask what a pow-mia, flag meant? They literally pronounced it like the woman's name Mia, and ended by calling it a pow, like a punch. LOL
 
I guess a little background is in order.
Sunday morning, had some "fun" with my darling and we're sleeping late and snuggled.
Doorbell at 8:30 AM, get up see them on the Ring camera, tell them I am not interested.
Zzzz....zzzz...ZZZZ...zzzz - - DING DONG! It is now 10:00 AM.
"We just wanted to know if we could talk to you now."

Grrrrr, I'd told them politely I wasn't interested, what gives?
So now I go open the door and talk to them through the security door: "not interested, okay?"

A week later, Sunday...sleeping in...DING DONG!
It's 9:00 AM and lo and behold, the same group of church ladies and one old guy.
"Please leave us alone"
"Sir we want to share the good news with you....etc etc bla bla Jesus, bla bla bla..."
"Excuse me, it's 9 in the morning and I like to sleep in on Sunday mornings, and we are not interested in joining a church, please don't bother us."

Now it's 3:00 PM - DING DONG!!!
This time it's a hispanic evangelical group prattling away in Spanish and I'm getting a little steamed.
"No habla espanol" (A lie, I can get by a little)
"Vamanos, okay?"

Lather rinse repeat every Sunday until I finally hung out my "angry shingle."
