What did you have for dinner? -Part dois

Roasted Portobello stuffed with seasoned minced leftover steak, bacon, sharp cheddar, Monterey Jack, sweet onion, garlic with port in the roasting pan.....the sauce poured over at service.

Served with a prefab bagged salad....one of the fancy dancy ones.

Grilled in a cast iron skillet spit roll pre-smeared well with a good butter.

hometown fair was tonight. this was my first one as a vegetarian, but it wan't too difficult.

cheese pizza slice
0.33 elephant ear.

probably the best elephant ear that i've had yet, and that's saying something.

We stepped out this evening to a new local Afghani Grilled Chicken spot. More take out than eat in, but we ate in. You guessed it, we ate lots of well seasoned and optionally lemoned grilled chicken. And it all tasted like chicken. Free tandoori breads, and chopped salads on the side with a spiced vinaigrette dressing. Not much else to choose from for sides except a few different rice dishes, that the staff did not recommend and a light peppery spinach pie in an enclosed flaky dough. Iced Citron teas, very sweet, and some kind of baklava for dessert, good stuff tho too much honey (I never thought I'd say such a thing). They're waiting for a new oven to arrive and be installed that does nothing but bake potatoes. They said they will have a variety of dressed baked sweet and regular potatoes on the menu once it is installed. Surprisingly very inexpensive. 1/2 a grilled chicken, with two sides $6.99. Iced or hot teas $2, 14 oz cups.

These people won't have to advertise. A great location by a major subway stop, a major bus hub for those in double fare zones, and the airports. Across the street from Queensborough Hall and a courthouse. Within walking distance from 3 high density population neighborhoods and a new hotel serving both airports and courthouse needs. About a 1/2 mile walk from where we live. A bit humid, but a pleasant walk home after dinner. It's been open since Monday, and they had to close early each day, sold out. The staff is polite, service fast, and free wet naps for all. No plastics, wood utensils, paper plates. Two people constantly cleaning.

Right now, open 10am to 10pm. By fall, they will introduce hot breakfasts, and open at 6am for the commuters. Smart move. They also having new Bunn coffee machines installed. Minimal, bright cafeteria like decorations, bright chromatic yellow tiled walls, white linoleum floors, licenses and permits on the wall by the register, pay as you order, cash, about 6 red tables with black wood and cane chairs for 4. Recessed LED lights in the white ceiling, two white ceiling fans. Huge floor to ceiling glass windows and doors. No TV but local radio playing on a small ancient JBL system.

While we ate, police cars kept arriving for take out orders. :) A seal of approval.

We wanted to go fishing for tuna and snapper on the Atlantic this morning with some of the grandkids. None of the sports fishing boats were heading to sea because of heavy intermittent squalls. Instead we tried off one of the nearby bridges, and then at Rockaway Beach in Gateway Park near the Queens Brooklyn border. Surf was way too rough. Win some, lose some. May be next Saturday morning. The kids weekdays are booked solid as usual.

Leftover rotisserie chicken was shredded and turned into chicken salad with my patented mustard mayo dressing and peas. Add whole wheat dinner rolls and a simple tomato salad and it was a simple yet satisfying dinner.

my wife and i split cheese fries and a soft pretzel at the town fair. good times.

I used to enjoy attending the Renaissance fair at Tuxedo Park. Then my wife started complaining about the amount of food I was consuming, including those giant turkey legs that left my face covered in grease, and everything I touched thereon. After awhile, I realized she was more upset about the attention I gave the belly dancers. In the name of domestic tranquility we started attending Dutchess County Fair. The Dutchess County Fairgrounds - Home of The Dutchess County Fair ? So Much More than a Great County Fair!

Most of the family is already up at the house, and will be attending opening day on Tuesday. The younger grandkids are all excited, the older ones pretending they aren't. My wife and I will head there early Wednesday morning via the LIRR and MetroNorth. Then a short walk to the house. I intend to stuff my face, and head home with a bounty of jams, jellies, sauces, sausages, pastries, cakes, pies, fresh unusual produce, and junk I have no need for. My wife, no doubt will be buying craft jewelry in between smacks to the back of my head for eating too much. I particularly enjoy the greased piglet catching competition. So many teenagers making fools of themselves is always a pleasure. Local music always brings new finds and old friends. One of my granddaughters has made it clear she expects to find a new dulcimer at the fair this year. I'm bringing extra cash.

A few years ago I bought a terrific oak and maple rocking chair for the front porch of the house, keeps getting better as it ages and as it is well used. As usual my pockets will be open to all my grandkids driving their parents nutz. Damn, no belly dancers. But a lot of real pretty young girls in shorter than short shorts. I am a leering dirty old man for the occasion. And I will catch the hairy eyeball curses from my daughters and daughter in laws.

Steak n Shake grilled cheese
fries with ketchup

Last night: a giant thing of pasta (whole wheat, edamame, and black bean), feel-good meat share ground beef, and a tomato sauce w/ San Marzanos, extra tomato paste, red wine, a few spices, tons and tons of smashed garlic, lightly simmered for a long time). I sometimes throw in cheddar when I microwave it. I try to make 6-8 lunches worth at a time.

But dinner last night was a ton of sourdough and baguette, a very soft stinky cheese, and pork pate. Oh and butter too.

Also, salad/garden tomato + bought mozeralla balls.

Tonight was "leftover" pasta.

We had dinner with our next door neighbors. They cooked. Eggplant and pasta. A couple bottles of red wine. It was quite nice.

that sounds awesome.

stomach was a bit odd, so i ate what sounded good.

small mac and cheese cup (Annie's.)
Late July chipotle tortilla chips with salsa con queso

not as bad as it sounds; probably about 400 cals.

that sounds awesome.

It was. They're nice folks. Old school kind of neighbors who keep an eye on our house when we're travelling and drop off fresh vegetables when they go to the farms out east (and vice versa though we travel a lot more than they do).

Unfortunately they're selling their house to move closer to her daughter.

that kind of sucks. i hate losing good neighbors.

Wife did Chicken Sofrito.

I added a salad from the garden.

It does. The moment the heat breaks the ducks will make authentic eggplant parmigiana. The magnificent mallard's best friend is Italian and he was smart enough as a child to ask questions, watch, and graze in the kitchen.

When others weren't around his grandmother even spoke English to me. Few knew that she understood. She made them all speak Italian and use crude sign language.

A peppery cream of celery soup served with Princi White Loaf and French Butter.

I am going for toast and butter next.

Roast pork Banh mi (a Vietnamese sandwich consisting of a toasted French baguette slathered with pate and filled with smoked pork infused with lemongrass, garnished with pickled carrots, cucumber and radish with fresh cilantro), a glass of milk, two bananas for dessert.

We headed out early to Rhinebeck for the Dutchess County Fair, arriving about 9:30 am. I started stuffing my face immediately, tasting as many different baked goods, smoked meats, sausages, boutique cheeses, heirloom fruit and vegetables, jams, jellies, preserves and reserves. By 1pm I had bought about 300 lbs of foodstuffs, not counting local wines and brandies. Fortunately, as they do every year, Fedex had set up a booth, and I arranged to overnight most everything I had bought back here. Sent about 30lbs of assorted goods back to the house for those staying there to enjoy. Packed about 20lbs of goods to take home ourselves.

My granddaughter found a real sweet dulcimer, made from maple and spruce, with beautiful inlays of cherry wood and quartz crystals, carvings of mountain angels on the back, and we bought it for her. She came home with us, is staying over until her folks come back, and she's getting to know her new dulcimer. Real nice tones.

We intended to stay for at least a couple of days, when my wife received an emergency phone call from her sister, who was in a complete panic, something about the "Fire Dept. is here" (EMTs) and we set out for home. When we arrived, we found her husband, who's 72 and retired, started working in his home shop early this morning, drinking wine since about 5am, forgot where he had put his wine glass, and sat on it. A few stitches, some embarrassment, and all was fine. There was no need for us to return, and having done some imbibing myself, I wouldn't have been much use anyway. When we arrived at their place, he was comfortably ensconced on the living room couch, stomach down, his butt levitated thanks to a pillow under his midriff, complaining it was hard to watch the TV from that position, it was giving him neck pain.

I doubt we'll be eating dinner tonight. Maybe some nibbling and more wine. When Fedex delivers tomorrow, I'll start portioning the goods for gift distributions for neighbors and friends, our own pantry. I have almost no specific memory of what I selected, it's all a bit blurry from tasting so many different items. Sometimes by the spoonful, sometimes by more. I truly enjoy county fairs. There was on one tart cherry pie that really stood out, with a bit of cream fraise on top, I ate much more than a spoonful. Brought home 4 of those pies. I think I need a nap.

BTW, I also bought some jerky treats and leather chews for the dog, boutique treats for the cat. They stayed here with one of my nieces babysitting. Brought her back a nice silver and red quartz hand crafted necklace as a thank you.

Last night we had some stuffed grape leaves, a few leftover falafel, hummus, bread and a salad. Tonight another version of veggie lasagna.
