What Are We Investing In?

Here’s a sob story for your entertainment. I’ve been enamored with Peter Lynch’s methods ever since I read “One Up On Wall Street” in 1989. Some real common sense stuff, investing in those companies where you can get a personal, almost hands-on feel for the company you are researching.

Around here, years ago, I started getting my vehicles washed at a small chain of car washes called Mister Car Wash. Their symbol is MCW. There were two original locations here, and one happened to be just off the interstate highway between my work and home. Their specialty was a monthly unlimited wash membership for $24.00 per month. I drove Mustangs, then a loaded Impala, and now a Silverado, all bought new, so I liked getting them washed once a week. The membership cost amounted to a little more than 2 1/2 washes, so I got the membership.

I started watching their stock years ago, and it almost hit $11.80 per share, then dropped through Covid, and again with the recovery. It bottomed out to $4.80 per share around November 1, 2023, and I remember thinking to myself that I ought to buy. They had built four more local locations and were always busy. Even after an almost 2% drop on Friday, the current price is $9.11 per share.

My bad… boy, did I miss that one.

My friend literally had his cursor hovering over the buy icon as he considered a purchase $1000 in Tesla stock back before the huge run-up. Easily his biggest regret.

Usually my regrets are when I sell too early. I sold completely out of elf beauty before it ran up huge (got back in a few months ago and enjoying a nice run but it could've been a 1000% gain with my old shares). Another regret is selling off some Nvidia when it 2xd and 3xd for me. Would easily be my biggest position.

My biggest regret so far this year was not buying enough Super Micro Computer. Started buying last summer/fall with an average cost of $258. Last week it hit over $1K. I don't mind selling that one off bit by bit since it's not a core position (at least not yet).

It’s kind of hard to fault selling too early. It’s not like you were panic selling, and I’m sure you thought things through before hitting that sell button. Maybe some investment regret, but none of us have 20-20 vision into the future. You made out very well on your investments. Better than me, although I’m not crying. Keep up the good work and put any greedy regret behind you. ;)

NVDA and SMCI treating me well today.

You know what I currently love about this bull market? Dear Leader convinced so many of his MAGA lemmings to sit on the sidelines because Biden was gonna crash the market.

The Google news of a new quantum computer chip started thinking of using $2000 sitting inside an IRA to invest in a few Quantum related stocks. Big money is going to continue flow in despite some astronomical valuations. Already own some big names inside index funds so going gamble on a few smaller players without worrying of losing the $2000.

Two I'm considering, IONQ and Rigetti

I bought IONQ a week ago, got stopped out, and just bought back in. Right now sitting at a small gain. If it goes back down it should stop at break even. Either way, I'm keeping it on the watchlist.

I suppose it's not too early to post my biggest winners for 2024 (in alphabetical order, not order of gains). These are the stocks that netted me anywhere from 25%-100+% gains*:
*Just a note, a few of my sells were shares I carried over from previous years. So while a few (like Adobe) were down this year, I sold early on and took profits as they started to dip.

Adobe (ADBE)
Arista Networks (ANET)
Astera Labs (ALAB)
Applovin (APP)
Axon Enterprise (AXON)
CAVA Group (CAVA)
Chipotle (CMG)
Crowdstrike (CRWD)
Deckers (DECK)
Doordash (DASH)
ELF Beauty (ELF)
Ferrari (RACE)
Freshpet (FRPT)
GigaCloud Technology (GTC)
GoDaddy (GDDY)
Interactive Brokers (IBKR)
Meta Platforms (META)
Mind Medicine (MNMD)
Netflix (NFLX)
Nvidia (NVDA)
Palantir (PLTR)
Reddit (RDDT)
Robinhood (HOOD)
Salesforce (CRM)
Sea Limited (SE)
Shift4 (FOUR)
Shopify (SHOP)
Super Micro Computer (SMCI)
Texas Roadhouse (TXRH)
Toast (TOST)
Trade Desk (TTD)
Ulta Beauty (ULTA)

My biggest sell was Nvidia, but that included shares bought a couples years ago with a 693% gain.

As of today, with my 4 main portfolios, I've averaged a 132% gain YTD.

This is the year I made a huge change in my investing strategy from a longterm growth and value investor to a short term trader. So far it's paid off well. I'm still curious what my return would have been if I held Palantir longer. Selling too soon out of Applovin was also one of my biggest mistakes. Probably would have doubled my portfolio with that one alone.

The space is insane at the moment. Put in two limit orders unfortunately only one executed. Own 100 shares of Rigetti now the other I wanted was Quantum Computing QUBT. Unhinged FOMO, think some of SHORTS are getting squeezed. Still have $1700 to gamble with. Cyber Security is another sector I think will continue to be hot 2025.

Wow, that is a very nice 24% gain so far for you today. Congrats! I usually don't buy stocks that are under $10 but I'll keep that one on my radar.

Wouldn't recommend to anyone. Low cost index funds is where all our money is invested except for Zoetis which we bought many years ago.

This money was sitting in cash and decided to speculate on something that's exciting. Just the first inning when it comes to quantum computing. Growth in the next 7 or 8 years is estimated at 35 %.

Got a nice 15% gain in IONQ immediately after initial purchase, yesterday. Expecting a pullback today but could see myself staying in for a while.

I made a 100% profit on Cardano, 50% on BTC and 300% on Dogecoin after Trump won. Holy shit.

I should be on cloud 9, but now I regret not putting in even more money back then.

Solana has been my big winner over the last few years. But I'm making sure I sell off most of my crypto this bull run. I didn't do it enough last time and let that portfolio dwindle.

Queue Greenspan's irrational exuberance speech for Quantum stocks. Been a fun ride last couple days.

Are you going to buy again on the dip or are you abandoning crypto for good?

I'll buy bitcoin once it appears it has bottomed out and begins rising again. Maybe 6 months-1 year after that I'll start buying alts again.

Traders took the news from Powell as pissing in the proverbial Punch Bowl or spiked Eggnog Bowl(Tis the season) Bah Humbug Powell!

2024 will still end up being good for most investors.

I missed out on Solana because I bet on Cardano instead. Its on my watchlist now, and Im waiting for the dip before I go in big.

I'd have a much larger return on SOL if Robinhood didn't sell what I had a couple years ago. Still annoyed about that.

Luckily most of it was on Coinbase and Exodus.

Not buying much today, but I did start a position in Fortinet. If it acts well I plan to make it a bigger postion.

Might buy into Sentinelone. Reading some positive things to like about the company.

Welp, going be another ugly day tomorrow for all the high flyers in the quantum arena.

Could be ugly for everyone if there's still no deal to fund the government and PCE comes in worse than expected.

I use Exodus and Kraken myself. I never want to do any trading on a smartphone, too unsecure.

Bought 50 shares of SentinelOne. Crowded field dominated by big players but company has some uniqueness. Average price target of about $30.

Sold my position a few weeks ago to break even as it broke the 50-day moving avg. Hopefully it turns around soon.
