“Once is happenstance,” Ian Fleming’s Auric Goldfinger tells the spy James Bond in the eponymous novel. “Twice is coincidence. The third time it’s enemy action.” Last month, the public learned that the Secret Service had deleted, or negligently allowed the deletion of, texts surrounding the January 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Last week, The Washington Post reported that texts for top officials then in the Department of Homeland Security, including Acting Secretary Chad Wolf and his deputy, Ken Cuccinelli, are also missing. And yesterday, CNN reported that, according to court filings, the Pentagon wiped the phones of top defense officials, including messages from that day. The old cliché goes that the cover-up, not the crime, is what gets people in trouble. In this case, the actual crime remains the most important and dangerous thing: Donald Trump’s failed months-long attempt to steal the presidency via legal machinations and then his last, desperate attempt to foment a riot that would achieve the same thing. Yet nearly two years later, the public keeps learning horrifying new bits of information. If the actions of Trump and his cronies—especially those outside the government, such as Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell—have become clearer, some of the remaining questions concern what public officials were doing.

The revelations of the string of deletions raises the specter that these agencies were not merely complacent but actually complicit. Some of the officials whose texts were deleted, like Secret Service agents, were civil servants, but others were political appointees, although they also held positions that were not meant to be involved in electoral politics and they had taken an oath to defend the Constitution. Did the deleted texts suggest sympathy with the mob? Or were they so critical of the president that the relevant agencies were afraid of attacks from Trump and his allies should the contents ever come to light? Who was responsible for the deletions, and when? Was Trump himself involved in any cover-up? Even with all these mysteries, the deletions correspond to Trump’s attempt to enlist essential government departments, such as the Pentagon and the Secret Service, into his political schemes. Even as new revelations continue, Trump makes plans for what he’ll do if he returns to office in 2025. In July, Axios’s Jonathan Swan reported on a plan to further subvert the executive branch and turn it into a political operation. If you like the current situation, where we may never know what top public officials were doing and saying while a mob descended on the Capitol, and why, you’re going to love the second Trump presidency.

This can't be mere coincidence. This is smelling like a massive cover-up and probable obstruction of justice.

Someone very high up on the food chain had to give the "delete texts" order to the Secret Service, the Department of Homaland Security, and the Pentagon.

Did that order originate in the Trump White House? Mark Meadows? Donald Trump himself?

Let's not forget the 15 boxes of WH files that were (oops) sent to Mara Lago instead of the National Archives. I can just picture Donald Trump and Steven Miller sitting by the fireplace going through each box and tossing a few files into the fire.

This is a cover-up. But more likely, obstruction of justice.

The trump administration = the least transparent WH ever. At least Nixon didn't destroy the tapes. he tried to hide them but lost his battle.

Thanks for posting this...... my wife and I were just discussing how this Jan 6th has much in common with the
Iran-Contra illegal weapon sales investigation when North and Secord were being held responsible for destruction of evidence by way of shredding.

Even Admiral Poindexter was found guilty of 5 felonies - obstruction and lying to Congress - and where did he end up? Cheney made him Director of DARPA Information Awareness Office. Republican support for criminals is nothing new. It runs generations deep.

Might as well get use to the term "cover-up" being used for these scandals. Because that's the reasonable conclusion to these stories. Mere incompetence is getting harder and harder to swallow.

Also remember Bush 43's CIA destroyed evidence of their torture and sabotaged the investigation of the Senate committee destroying their information. Even after JFK the CIA seems to have destroyed evidence involving an Oswald phone call and photos of him in Mexico city.

And just yesterday the prosecutor in Alex jones’ sandy book case got sent a full image of Alex jones phone for two years, all legal because it was sent to him by jones’ lawyers. It was a mistake but they didn’t catch it in time.

Gotta wonder what’s on what may be the only intact phone belonging to a guy who had election conspirators on his show.

We need to see all of these texts.

It’s time to demand they access the carinivore ( or whatever they call it now) servers.

Total Information Awareness was the original name you forever to. I caught it by accident on cspan flipping channels when I caught the logo.

The eye on the pyramid from the dollar bill casting it’s gaze across the globe.

Congress shut the program down when folks got mad about it. But they just changed the name and moved the hardware to a different place.

This tech was devised to collect and analyze text communications and phone calls. As far as anybody knows it still exists. And if the worst theories are true contains all of our text messages and emails.

(I just used the “ check carnivore” bit in another thread, so when you mentioned it and poindexter I was like AHA!)

What's with all these people still possessing phones almost 2 years later when they have to know the law wants them? If I committed a crime and used my phone to facilitate that crime, it would be 100 feet deep in the next counties land fill or in an incinerator.

I guess that's the difference between smart government agents and nimrod republican coup plotters.

Jones actually led the rioters with a bullhorn right up to the capitol steps egging them on the entire time. Perhaps enticement of riot is in his future. He plead the 5th hundreds of times in front of the committee and most of the answers are probably on his phone.

LOL Does it give you a clue that all your left wing media sources are reading from the same script? Where have we heard this before?

Can anybody incompetent this competently?

It would be so poetic if one of the creators of the Talk Radio Conservatives was the one who ends up blowing the lid off the election conspiracy with the text messages he failed to delete from his phone.

With any luck a bunch of people are shitting their pants right now.

I know it's hard to imagine any Trump minion doing something competently, but at least wrt the Secret Service, it appears they did a pretty good job of permanently deleting their texts. It appears the people Trump corrupted in the SS got this right.

They got Alex jones’ phone.

I wouldn’t be crowing just yet.

I don't have much comment for that little media collage from 2017/18. But what I could guarantee you is if you applied all that today, it's 100% correct. Sooner than later, I hope.

And here's the real deal. Fox and the rest of the RW extreme media is doing the exact same thing now with Biden. How many times have Fox prime time hosts ranted about Biden's incompetence/dementia and called for the 25th amendment? On some days, you probably hear it 5 times a day and it's not reserved for only Biden. Harris and Pelosi are caught up in it too along with AOC and the squad and whoever else they don't like.

So, you were saying??

Ever seen the movie Bad Grampa? The scene in the restaurant where he shits all over the wall while playing the farting game with his grandson.

Just picture Donald Trump after a bucket of KFC and a gallon of Diet Coke.

People involved with law enforcement not understanding the significance of keeping evidence during a major crime????
Yeah, they were covering their own involvement.
Perhaps they should be paying attention to the latest DOJ announcement. AG Garland announced today that 4 officers were indicted in the Breonna Taylor case. Got them will all sorts of federal crimes including falsifying the warrant.

Nice to see Garland on the job. He's been investigating that for almost 2 years. These things take time. Time that I don't mind waiting as long as justice is served.

LOL While 75% of YOUR OWN PARTY doesn't think Biden is fit to run for a second term. But it's all about Fox, huh? You guys are a flipping hoot.

Think he'll ever get to the Hunter Biden investigation? I'm guessing no.
