In classic style, the US Army Old Guard passes in review. Included are the Continental Color Guard, the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps, and a platoon of Army Soldiers in the Continental uniforms of the Revolutionary War. The Old Guard is also the 3rd Infantry Regiment.


The regiment colonel commanding has a representation of his staff. Only four Old Guard companies march at Summerall Field Ft. Myer for this mass retirement ceremony. The four are, before the Continental Army Color Guard, Bravo and Charlie of 1st BN; following the colors is my company I was in, Echo aka Honor Guard Company, of 4th BN, and Alpha Cpy of 4th BN that is the exact replica of Gen. Washington's Commander in Chief Guard to include the stars of the 13 original states on the blue flag.

The duplex brick housing in view are official residences of 4-star and 3-star general officers stationed at the Pentagon or posts nearby, such as Ft. Meade MD. The housing in view is on both sides of Arlington Road to the Ft. Myer Gate of Arlington cemetery just out of view to our right. Arlington Road continues to our left onto Buffalo Soldier Road that continues to have general officer duplex housing.

In 1898 a regiment of Buffalo Soldiers cavalry was assigned to Ft. Myer in the first stationing of Buffalo Soldiers east of the Mississippi River -- Ft. Myer founded in 1862 was a sprawling cavalry post. Commanding the regiment was Col. Henry who held the Medal of Honor for his actions against Geronimo and his warriors in the southwest. Ft. Myer Henry Gate is in his name, honor, memory. For a period of time in WW I two regiments of Buffalo Soldiers and the Old Guard Regiment were stationed at the Mexico border just in case, later reassigned.

The reviewing officer of this ceremony is the 2-star CG of the Joint Task Force National Capital Region and CG of the Military District of Washington who we see momentarily at the very end of the vid. It's at the end of each ceremony/parade the commander of troops reports to the reviewing officer that the ceremony has concluded. Of course this is as nobody is left on the field ha -- the troops are back at their billets in cold showers from the heat and humidity. The Old Guard billets are on Sheridan Drive to the left of the camera and that also runs along the front of the parade field that is across from Conmy Hall.

Well this was an unexpected trip down memory lane lol. I'm 3rd rank squad leader in the 1st element behind the colors.

I served in E Company (Honor Guard) 2nd Plt. from Feb 1973 to Jan 1977, my last ceremony was President Carter's Inaguartion. "Sgt D" was our platoon seargent! At one time, we had MSG Francis "Jack" Daniels as 1st Sgt! Some of the best and proudest memories of my life.

Served in the 3rd US Infantry {TOG} from February 1984 to December 1986 in Alpha and then Bravo Companies. Watching this video brings back some great memories. I think I marched on Summerall field at least 40-50 times in that time I was there. I had been in the Army six years when I arrived at the 3rd Herd! It seems just like yesterday! OLD GUARD ALL THE WAY!

Indeed, ninety-nine percent of the armed forces hate parades and ceremonies as well they should. I'd hate being in the parade you and your unit totally ****ed up hopelessly and eternally -- every time too. This of course is common across the services.

Ordinary parades across the armed forces are gang**** events that are done only occasionally and very badly and poorly. Yet the elite forces such as airborne to name but one regular force category march very well and this is because ABN are among the Soldiers who do well at just about anything military.

Doing it professionally in and around the nation's capital and throughout each week for months and months -- to include rehearsals and practices -- is radically and qualitatively superior to the occasional parade gang**** imposed on ordinary forces that are always and understandably and predictably totally out of their element doing ceremonies and parades. Indeed I'd consider having to march with or watch a regular force parade to be a cruel and unusual punishment and I'd sue their asses off for it. I'd want people locked up for staging such a monstrosity against military dignity and self respect.

This parade is supposed to include units from such elite forces as the 82nd Airborne and the 10th Mountain Division because these are among the elite can-do units that do almost everything military well and to their credit. I'm certain meanwhile your unit is not invited to this upscale show on Saturday June 14th. Your unit and a thousand other units across the armed forces have other things to do that they can do and do well.

You can bet your sweet bippy they will have plenty of time to practice marching. Having met a platoon or so worth of the 'hairborne' and a few 10th, they were distainful of parades, the REMFs march in formation, grunts just don't play. Muscle memory no matter what you think of the soldiers.
Being 'elite' doesn't equal being a good 'hollywood' soldier. It means they kick ass and leave some REMF to take names-'why would I want to know what the loser's name is???'
While I hated every parade I was ever in you can bet your 4th POC it wasn't a Charlie Foxtrot. Just one massive PITA....

I said elite troops perform parades very well and with great credit to themselves and their unit, NCO leaders and officers in command. I have always posted about this that 99% of regular force troops dislike, hate, despise parades and ceremonies. I have always posted that membership in each service ceremonial honor guard of the Joint Task Force - National Capital Region is strictly voluntary, that only those who want to be there are accepted into it. That the Pentagon will have it no other way.

The ceremonial services of the JTF-NCR are not REMF's which is an ignorant and blind statement to make. Such statements are only made by IMF's. I have posted that there is no ceremonial military specialty or rating in the USA military, and that each member of the JTF-NCR has a military specialty.


The 3rd Infantry Regiment The Old Guard of the Army has been continuously certified as deployable since 1784 -- its list of battles is long and highly distinguished. The regiment is a regiment of the US 5th Army whose HQ is Ft. Carson CO. The 5th Army and the 1st Air Force comprise the main force of US Northern Command whose mission is the defense of North America against all enemies foreign and domestic. US NORCOM is integrated under the command of the North American Aerospace Defense Command or NORAD. Army active duty troops at the southern border since 2018 are Soldiers of the 5th Army which is dispersed throughout the country. Currently there are about 7000 active duty troops of the 5th Army at the border -- which is overkill for sure but orders are orders eh and the Generalissimo Trump is the wildman moron we know him to be.

It's expected btw that a brigade of the 82nd Airborne Infantry Division and a brigade of the 10th Mountain Infantry Division will enter Mexico to destroy drug cartels. They will be supported by the 2nd Stryker Combat Brigade of the 4th Infantry Division and the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade of the 4th ID. While plans can change this has been pretty stable since shortly after Trump took office. In fact the 2nd Stryker and 3rd Aviation Brigades are at the southern border already. I can't recall the last time the Old Guard deployed overseas, when did they??? I also missed when the JTF-NCR deployed to the Sandbox, did I miss it???? These are honor, ceremonial, state funeral support units. They spend far more time practicing ceremonial duties in one month than a line unit does in a year. I'll admit I don't know your service background, if you ever posted it, I have forgotten. So just what is your service background. I was Spam in a Can and a leg....

Well notquiteright I am a paid up Lifetime member of The Old Guard Association TOGA which is a specialized, exclusive and select organization for veterans who served in the 3rd Infantry Regiment The Old Guard of the Army at any time and rank. This applies only to those who served at Ft. Myer and Ft. McNair in the Military District of Washington DC. I am an active donor to the TOGA sponsorship fund. TOGA was founded in 1997 by the then Regiment commander colonel and a former member of TOG.

So then notquiteright I am a member and donator in The Foundation of The Old Guard which is dedicated to assisting active duty and former Old Guardsmen and their families in addition to other fiduciary activities. I specify my regular donation to scholarships.

My membership of the American Legion veterans organization lapsed while I was abroad for 25 years. I do receive veterans health and medical care, currently at the Pensacola FL VA Clinic. In the past I have been an outpatient at VA medical facilities in Boston MA, Brockton MA, Providence RI and Washington DC.

No you can't recall, that's correct. You need to be present which you have not been.

The 2nd Battalion "Redcatchers" of the 3rd Infantry Regiment The Old Guard deployed and fought in Vietnam from 1966 to 1970 as a part of the 199th Infantry Division. The regiment HQ building at Ft. Myer Folland Hall is named after Cpl. Michael Folland who was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously for his actions above and beyond in Vietnam with the 2nd battalion.

After 9/11 companies of the 3d IR TOG deployed singularly to Iraq and to the Horn of Africa.

Today's 2nd Battalion 3rd Infantry Regiment "Patriots," are part of the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division and is stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state. The battalion was reactivated in 2001 after a hiatus with a new generation of soldiers as a part of the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd ID.

The 2nd - 3rd Infantry Regiment operated at the forefront of Army Transformation as the lead battalion in the Brigade Combat Team Concept. At the time its total authorized strength was 691 personnel. The 2nd-3rd Infantry Regiment has served in various deployments to include Iraq and twice in Afghanistan. The Army likes to rotate and interchange TOG troops at Ft. Myer with the 2nd-3rd troops at Ft. Lewis. Keeps 'em all on their toes it does.

US Army Headquarters Battalion is located at Ft. Myer and oversees some 6,200 Army personnel in the National Capital Region to include the Military District of Washington and the Pentagon. US Marine Corps HQ BN is located at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall behind the Pentagon and is, same as Ft. Myer, adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery. Ft. Myer is on the north side of ANC while Henderson Hall is on the south side of the sacred site where I was honored to do military funerals for the fallen.
