Sure he wrote imagine, which lyrically, is a pile of collectivist bullshit. But he also wrote revolution, which is anti-revolutionary. That matters because people aren't going to vote to lower their standard of living, and that's what socialism does. If you are anti-revolutionary, then there's no point in being a socialist because you are eliminating the only way to make it happen.
When John wrote imagine, he had an entire room in his manhattan penthouse dedicated to storing his fur coats. This was a guy who clearly enjoyed the fruits of capitalism.
