We have to have an enemy, the USSR is gone so we had to improvise. If no enemy it is much more difficult to jsutify the military expendures and the invasion of privacy. And

The "war on terror" is just a convenient shorthand to express the concept that we are at war with Islamists who seek to establish a global caliphate by any means necessary.

Stupid people who are decidedly left of center go on and on and on about how we somehow deserve to be attacked. Stupid people who are decidedly right go on and on about how we have done nothing to enrage these people. Stupid people who are also clinically insane propose fantastic alternative realities to fit their psychosis as if Islamists don't actually exist or have an agenda.

The reality of the matter is that this is a clash of civilizational values, we are hated for what we represent as well as for what we do, some of the things we do exacerbate the situation, but we cannot be expected to just roll on our back and pee on our belly, and the entire situation vis a vis the west and the Islamic world in general is just too complex to be reduced to the sort of mindless platitudes stupid people offer by way of explaining it.

No, you wouldnt think that at all. Theres millions of them. And we arent killing them to change their beliefs, just to stop certain ones from succeeding in attacks. Its a strategy of supression and deterrance, to defend ourselves from the worst of attacks. Which is not to say its not counterproductive.
