Researchers have found that following 5 good habits can add 10 years to your life. I expect that those 10 years free of COPD, heart disease or diabetes would be healthier years as well.

I've made this into a poll if anyone wants to tick the boxes. When you're done your brisk walk and finished your salad go vote :D

When it comes to staying healthy, most people have the same motivation: living as long and fulfilling a life as possible. And while science has yet to find a true fountain of youth, researchers have identified certain behaviors that can increase longevity.

One study, published in the journal Circulation last year, even argued that adhering to just five healthy habits could extend your lifespan by roughly a decade. Here’s what they are, and what research to date says about living your longest life.

Here are the five habits:
  1. Eat a healthy diet.
  2. Exercise regularly.
  3. Maintain a healthy body weight.
  4. Drink only in moderation.
  5. Don't smoke.

I already do 4 of those 5 things. My weight could still come down a bit.

No problem with 2-5. My diet is ok, not sure I would call it a healthy diet, but it is not totally unhealthy.

They define healthy diet in the article as this:

" Other studies have also found longevity benefits associated with some of the specific foods and nutrients included in a Mediterranean diet, such as whole grains, fiber, fish, plant-based proteins and healthy fats. On the other hand, foods including processed snacks and meats, fried foods and sugar-sweetened beverages have been linked to higher risks of chronic disease and death. "

The more healthy foods you can add and the more you can reduce unhealthy foods the better. It doesn't mean you have to be perfect, but on the whole a person's diet should be weighted toward whole foods as much as possible.

I'm also a 2 - 5. I have a hard time giving up some processed foods - nachos, pizza, cheese. We do make sure we have a salad at least every day and most of the time we have something like salmon or chicken for dinner. But when nachos make an appearance I'm taking days off my lifespan 😔

Then my diet is "not healthy".

That is ok. I for one would not want to add 10 years to my life. Quality of living is important to me. My parents last 10 years was not what I would call a good quality of life.

It is hard to maintain a healthy diet in this ocean of processed food we live.

But I work hard at it having vegetables and fruit everyday. Avoiding the sugary drinks. Doing intermittent fasting. "Wait, is that bag of Oreo's opened?"

Keeping stress to manageable levels is very helpful. Constant worrying will age you fast.

I agree and think that good relationships help that and longevity generally.

I mostly stay healthy- my GF is vegan, so I eat that at least twice a week, though I sometimes pig out on the weekends. Ive also got a treadmill in the house and run every other day- I can now run about 3 miles in under 15 minutes. Yoga for my back, and I'm a social drinker, and only on weekends with my friends. Dont smoke and semi-retired, so I get plenty of sleep too. All in all Im good.

Seems like #3 would be a natural side effect of #1 and #2, but I have 1-4 down pat and I'm grateful. I've been an off-and-on nicotine addict for over 30 years, but because of #2 and #3 I can still go up 10 flights of stairs before getting winded.

Occasional fasting is solid gold. I've never been overweight, and for years I had people insist that I was blessed with the metabolism of a humming bird. Meanwhile, I hate plastic cheese and fried foods, and usually I just have a Naked fruit smoothie or nothing at all until around 2-3 PM. All this time I was occasionally fasting and didn't realize it. So my GF started doing it about 9 months ago and has lost 70 lbs, while still enjoying any and all junk food she wants during her window. Funny thing is, she never could understand what I meant when I said junk food like McDonald's makes my stomach hurt. Now after cutting out plastic cheese and fried food for a long duration it makes her stomach hurt too whenever she goes back. That stuff isn't "food" at all! You can leave a slice of American cheese out for months and it'll never grow mold, because mold is smarter than that. :)

You know the fasting record is 382 days by an obese Scotsman who wanted to lose weight? He was successful.

Fasting, even intermittent, works by reducing blood glucose levels and insulin production. Your body burns fat instead of glucose.

Have a lot of sex, I mean good sex, not "come on wife, I want some now", forget the alcohol and smoke some weed, stop being ANGRY all the time: immigrants, socialists, minorities aren't ruining your life, peeking under the bed all the time does, so go and HAVE SOME FUN, get off of cable TV, lighten up, and you will gain 10 years right there.
