Walmart just leveled with Americans: China won’t be paying for Trump’s tariffs, in all likelihood you will

Control of the House and Senate is always at some level of risk in a president's first midterm as the president is not on the ballot. And the republicans will have more Senate seats at risk simply based on cycles. However for the democrats to take advantage they will have to engage in serious self reflection over the next two years.

After scanning the news I should modify some comments I made earlier. Apparently Trump public threat has had a more immediate beneficial effect than I anticipated. Rather than getting strident and unyielding pushback it appears that both Canada's and Mexico's leaders bent the knee to the US.

Canada's Justin Trudeau has indicated he is willing to renegotiate security concerns, and Mexico's president followed suit. Contrary in part to Trumps claim that Sheinbaum Parado has agreed to "effectively close the southern border' she has confirmed her "excellent" conversation with Trump and agreed to stop the migrant caravans from reaching the US.

This is, of course, only the opening positions of both parties and in negotiations I am sure Trump will expect more, especially from Mexico.

In any event, Trump demonstrated to Biden and Harris and the Democrats that this situation never had to be - had Biden the backbone or desire to stop the flood. It also demonstrates the insincerity of the administration on this issue.

I still can’t figure why Trump is obsessed with tariffs, other than that it is a regressive sales tax that hits harder those on the bottom. Seems like the same regressive tax policy of states like Texas.

Probably because he slept through his economic course(s) in college. Somewhere along the line he missed David Ricardo's law of comparative advantage, and a bunch of other neo-classical insights of the last two centuries.

Know nothing populism isn't always due to ignorance; it is also due to a stubborn refusal to believe that one's favorite "solution" is logically flawed.

Prices on most items will be higher under Trump. Importers/retailers aren't going to suffer tariff tax losses, they will be passed onto American consumers.

You were warned.
Not rocket science here. All economists know Trump will own his own personal inflation. All these dumb ****s that voted for him will be singing a different tune next spring. America elected the dumbest president we have ever had. The MAGA culties too stupid too understand the reality here either.

I think all of the librul panic on tarriff is just gaslighting. Even if the tarriffs happen, it's not going to be devastating.

It absolutely will. 25% tariffs across the board tariffs on all imports from two of our largest trade partners, including a large portions of our agricultural and fuel imports, absolutely will be devastating.

As will the 200% tariff Trump wants to put on China.

Republicans hate inflation so much they want to make it worse.

Walmart makes it's profits from volume sales. Costco and Sams are wholesalers and primarily make their money on membership dues. They would be raising their prices far less then Walmart. In anycase, I think China will in their own way cover the tarrifs just like they did in Trump's first term. The regime's survival is dependent on trade with the west, primarily the US.
Just an asinine take. Congrats.

The Walmart CFO just days ago claimed that two thirds of all items sold in Walmart are grown or produced in the US. That suggests that the infrastructure is here. As for what we import, it's just a matter of buyers sourcing. It's not rocket science.
He claimed lmao 🤣

I get the impression that you have never really been involved in business.

I ran my own small business quite successfully for almost 20 years while working for someone else for over 30. Quite a bit of it simultaneously. I did it with practical, pragmatic, common sense by the Adam Smith basics. Which means I do things the way they actually work, and not the “educated” means of business that got folks with MBA’s like Bear Stearns, Lehman Bros. and AIG, et al, where they got in 2008. You know those really dumb “smart” people whose only “clever” (people like me call it fraud) bit of business is they f##k up with other people’s money (frequently without their fully informed consent).

So, yeah, I’m pretty basic in business. I’m a pretty basic fellow. Just like my ethics and my character. Which is why they are all rock solid and can be depended upon.

Actually both of you are correct. Tariffs are a form of excise tax and the elasticity of supply and demand will influence how much is absorbed by the producer (or seller), how much more the consumer pays, and how much the supply itself is reduced below prior demand.

Moreover, while long term supply may eventually reduce the impact on the consumer, supply over the short term (say 18 months) may be constrained, increasing prices. The auto parts and assemblies' custom made for US car makers will have to be set up in some other country, crops planted in other countries, etc.

So "short lived" or not Trump may find his Senate majority (as well as the House) gone in two years.

"Its the economy..." is always the number one concern of the voter.

Right. It’s not that I don’t get that.

But what they don’t get, and that I do because I’m so “basic”, is that when push comes to shove they are almost always placing “the others guys” wallet at risk to reach their ends. Frequently, just like this tariff business, without their fully informed consent. Just some over riding tacit permission, like a power of attorney given without being fully informed of what that means and does, to make decisions that impact others.

So, yeah, that leaves folks like me screaming at my peers not to keep voting for these chuckleheads and unethical practitioners with power you give them to act in your name. Stop investing in people who do things like create massively over leveraged financial instruments, or political policy, made of shite and wrapped in gold foil. Don’t invest your vote and/or your wallet in such people who are so “smart” that things like “alternative facts” and situational ethics are something they believe in. Basic is sound. Basic is good. Basic is ethical and solid.

They don’t listen because all they see is shiny gold leaf and they disregard what their noses are telling them. They aren’t using all their sense(s) in their decision making.

I’m basic, so I use all six of mine (the sixth being common sense).

You don't understand. Do you think he actually wants to put teriffs on goods coming in from China?

To nothing happening except a failed tariff policy that harms Americans and then Trump is pressured to rescind it?
It's sad that people are so used to such incompetent politicians. History will remember Donald Trump as one of the greatest.

And doesn't that just describe the last 4 years to a T? Democrats have been living off know nothing populism for years and years.

Most of them have never taking a civics course or passed a US history course either.

Kamala Harris didn't lose the election. Stupidity and bigotry won.
No stupidity and bigotry lost.
I thought that most Americans would have learned their lesson after the first 4 disastrous years of Trump.
It wasn't for disastrous years. It was for pretty good years despite obstruction from the political elite.
Obviously I was wrong. MAGAs are proud to be stupid and racist. Its now part of their GOP platform.
And that's why all you can do is call names that's all I ever see you do you have nothing you never do there is nothing to you but hatred.

I I want sexy you have my condolences
I will smile as they suffer the effects of the policies they voted for.
And you think this is a virtue? People who are this narcissistic make me feel sorrow for them.

Right. It’s not that I don’t get that.

I don't think you get it there won't be any tariffs.

Did you notice right after Joe Biden took office some global incidents started popping off. Russia invaded Ukraine hamasan is real conflicts start to Stew and boil.

This is because our current leadership is profoundly incompetent at keeping peace.

Trump understands you keep peace through strength. You don't go to a bullying beg him to please stop punching. You incentivize them to stop with negative consequences.

Sure tariffs would maybe hurt America a little bit but it would melt down those economies and China and Iran and Mexico like a cotton candy house and a rainstorm.

There will not be any tariffs because the dictator in China and the dictator in Iran and the dictators around Hamas was simply have no money.
So, yeah, that leaves folks like me screaming at my peers not to keep voting for these chuckleheads and unethical practitioners with power you give them to act in your name.
Again I didn't vote for Joe Biden I didn't vote for Harris. They just want to fill a space and be puppeteered by a group of people that thrive on war.

Why do you think the war engine cranked up the second they got their stooge of a candidate back in?

You're the only one falling for alternative facts you're arguing for the machine that has given us war and death and poor economy and strife and struggle.

The American people have had enough and kicked these bums out.

They don't even have the courtesy to wrap the turd in foil they just kick it down your throat with Spike heel shoes.
They don’t listen because all they see is shiny gold leaf and they disregard what their noses are telling them.
No they don't listen because they know better than you.

I've talked to you enough that you stupidly think you're the smartest person in every room and you have everything figured out you are behind on this you need remedial lessons.

You are afraid of a tariff that will not happen. That's the plan.

They aren’t using all their sense(s) in their decision making.
You're just crying because they don't listen to you you don't know what's you're talking about they know better than you.
I’m basic, so I use all six of mine (the sixth being common sense).
No you don't you listen to words and believe I don't understanding a deeper strategy. And the roadmap has been laid out before he was president four years ago. He's probably going to do similar things.

That was really quite funny to watch them fold.

Biden and Harris didn't want to stop the flood they wanted the floods to continue.

I have my theories as to why that is but I'll save those for now.

The more the American people are displaced the more these mediocre politicians will find themselves in higher levels. I don't think Biden knows what he had for breakfast he's just a figurehead.

There are but two ways to learn in this world. There is what I call “The Punch and Learn Method”: wherein one learns to duck by getting hit in the head often enough that one finally ducks or dies.

The other is what a dub the “Learning By Osmosis Method”, wherein one learns to duck by watching others get hit in the head.

I much advocate the latter.

History is my teacher. I learn by reading of others getting punched in the head and not repeating their actions.

Time will tell, and history will document the record for public consumption (and again few will learn from it). Most, like yourself, will be deaf as a post to its warnings.

Good luck with that.

There's some total of every post you've ever made is just you telling people that they're deaf or senseless or stupid or blind for not agreeing with you.

Do you have nothing else you are completely devoid of all intellectual thought. You're not even a good provocateur.

There's some total of every post you've ever made is just you telling people that they're deaf or senseless or stupid or blind for not agreeing with you.

And there is where you keep getting it wrong.

I’m not saying they’re dumb for not agreeing with me. I say they are dumb for not using a precious resource free for anyone who cares to to use. History. The public record of everything we’ve ever experienced and what we did about it.

It’s obvious they aren’t when history says “this” on a matter and these folks do “that”, that they aren’t listening to what history has to say on the matter.

Do you have nothing else you are completely devoid of all intellectual thought. You're not even a good provocateur.

The good reporting of history is the sum of intellectual thought. The observation of all that has transpired filtered through the objectivity of cogent cognition benefitted by hindsight.

“There are none so blind as those who will not see.”

Just read the history and you can be the ‘smartest guy in the room” too.

Have fun now.

And there is where you keep getting it wrong.
Because nobody couldn't be right if they dare disagree with you.
I’m not saying they’re dumb for not agreeing with me.
Yes you are.
I say they are dumb for not using a precious resource free for anyone who cares to to use. History.
So you're saying I'm stupid because I don't agree with you.
The public record of everything we’ve ever experienced and what we did about it.

It’s obvious they aren’t when history says “this” on a matter and these folks do “that”, that they aren’t listening to what history has to say on the matter.
Yes again because anybody who dares disagree with you is deficient in some way that's just how amazing you are right.
The good reporting of history is the sum of intellectual thought. The observation of all that has transpired filtered through the objectivity of cogent cognition benefitted by hindsight.

“There are none so blind as those who will not see.”
And let me guess you don't reflect on this you just think everyone that disagrees with you is blind but don't bother answering I already know the answer
Just read the history and you can be the ‘smartest guy in the room” too.
The person who thinks they're the smartest guy in the room is normally the dumbest.

I know better than to try and pretend to be like you. When I drove people away from me I looked at myself and thought maybe I'm doing something and so I turned my ego down a little bit something you don't seem to have learned.
Have fun now.
What pointing out how ridiculous you are it's moderately fun it'll get boring like it always does

Because nobody couldn't be right if they dare disagree with you.

Still pushing that even though I’ve stated that’s not the case. You aren’t disagreeing with me. You’re disagreeing with history. The public record.
Yes you are.

No im not (we can do this all day… it’s pointless). If im wrong, as you say i am, and I’m stating I’m only repeating the public record, then refute that public record. You won’t be able to, so you deflect and go ad hominem, making it about me instead of the public record you can’t refute.

It’s obvious, and it won’t work.

So you're saying I'm stupid because I don't agree with you.

Not at all. I’m saying it’s dumb to turn one’s nose up at a freely available public resource, the public record/history, that has a proven track record and is highly effective at providing answers to the questions you’re asking.

Yes again because anybody who dares disagree with you is deficient in some way that's just how amazing you are right.

Ad hominem BS. NOT working.

Refute the public record. That’s what I’m standing on. It’s what you’ll have to defeat if you want to knock me over.

Going to be a tough slog. It’s rather solid.

Still pushing that even though I’ve stated that’s not the case.
You lying about what you're argument is or you're complete incompetent to understand it doesn't matter.

I no longer care what you have to say. You have some that you don't deserve to be listened to.

You lying about what you're argument is or you're complete incompetent to understand it doesn't matter.

I no longer care what you have to say. You have some that you don't deserve to be listened to.

No reason for you to care about what I have to say and I’d not claim differently. Caring or not caring about what I have to say isn’t going to change anything for you. The public record I keep referring to won’t be changed as well. I’m just suggesting adding a deeper understanding of history is a positive way of avouding mistakes.

We are repeating a series of historic events that didn’t work out well for folks. Continuing to repeat these actions, leasing to the same bad results, isn’t smart. Not because *II say so…
