Iran’s parliament approves bill to stop nuclear inspections

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran’s parliament on Tuesday approved a bill that would suspend U.N. inspections of its nuclear facilities and require the government to boost its uranium enrichment if European signatories to the 2015 nuclear deal do not provide relief from oil and banking sanctions.

The vote to approve the bill, which would also require approval by the Guardian Council, a constitutional watchdog, was a show of defiance after the killing of a prominent Iranian nuclear scientist last month. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has the final say on all nuclear policies.

Parliament Speaker Mohmmad Baqer Ghalibaf was quoted by state TV as saying lawmakers were “hopeful to remove sanctions through this stern decision.”

The final vote tally wasn’t immediately released. But in a vote on whether to discuss the bill earlier Tuesday, the official IRNA news agency said 251 lawmakers in the 290-seat chamber voted in favor, after which many began chanting “Death to America!” and “Death to Israel!”

The bill would give European countries one month to ease sanctions on Iran’s key oil and gas sector, and to restore its access to the international banking system. The U.S. imposed crippling sanctions on Iran after President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the nuclear agreement, triggering a series of escalations between the two sides.

COMMENT:-

Although its a bit of an over simplification, this action is analogous to someone who was purchasing a car stopping making the payments when the vendor refused to deliver the car.[/indent[

Can they be blamed? If Trump won't hold up his end of the deal why would anyone expect Iran to? Like they say; it takes two to tango...

Cool. Hopefully Europe can get this figured out. Surely they have a usable banking system and can purchase enough oil to make Iran happy.

Well it's not like America can just walk back in and say: "Sorry about the last 4 years where we let a crazy man undo all the work the previous guy did but now we mean it and it's cool right?"

And at the rate we're going they don't need to chant "Death to America!" because we seem to have been quite adept at killing our reputation, economy, government and populous over the last four years.

Just let it be January 21st already so I can hope the world stops self-destructing for a moment...

Welp, I’d say the assassination had its intended result.

Do you mean the Iranian scientist or the dream that was America?

I think it was also a poorly executed murder suicide revenge killing 4 years in the making myself.

This is bad news, not that I can blame them at this point.

Cool. Hopefully Europe can get this figured out. Surely they have a usable banking system and can purchase enough oil to make Iran happy.

Not only that, but I rather suspect that Europe could survive a 21 day period of "crushing trade sanctions" imposed by Presidential Fiat.

As if Iran needs an excuse to want to build nuclear weaponry...

Quite right, when faced with a hostile government that possesses (in the neighbourhood of) 200 nuclear weapons and which has shown absolutely no reluctance to actually conduct military attacks on Iran (and uses 70+ year old "collective guilt" to prevent other countries calling it out for its actions), it only makes sense for Iran to have a retaliatory capacity that would deter that hostile government from escalating its attacks on Iran to the "nuclear strike" level.

Mind you, I certainly appears that you didn't bother to read the article, Did you?

Did you know that IF you build a "100Kt" nuclear weapon using weapon's grade Uranium THEN you get a 100Kt blast, BUT IF you build a "100Kt" nuclear weapon using 20% Uranium, THEN you do NOT get a 20Kt blast?

Not only that, but I rather suspect that Europe could survive a 21 day period of "crushing trade sanctions" imposed by Presidential Fiat.
Without a doubt. Should all work out then. What do you think, will it take a full month for Europe to address this?

20%!? 6 times what is needed for nuclear power plant?

So much for that tired lie people have been spewing.

A natural consequence of the downward spiralling relations. Sucks, but whaddaya do? Reinstate and nuclear treaty?

Without a doubt. Should all work out then. What do you think, will it take a full month for Europe to address this?

My guess is that the European reaction is going to be accelerated by Mr. Trump's actions (and, possibly, by the answer to a few discrete inquiries directed to Mr. Biden).

If Mr. Trump responds to anything that even looks suspiciously like it might potentially resemble something sort of like an indication that the Europeans are theoretically considering trying to preserve the deal by offering some slight amelioration of the trade restrictions with his usual bluster and "Presidential Fiat" that flat out threatens the Europeans (which is WELL within the bounds of probability), then the Europeans are reasonably likely to tell him to go and urinate up a twisted fibrous hemp cable by simply ignoring his orders and dropping trade sanctions on Iran precipitously.

However, if Mr. Biden assures the Europeans that there is no need for any precipitous action because he fully intends to bring the US back into the agreement AND to comply with the terms AND to "make good" any adverse effects of Mr. Trump's petty and juvenile actions, I suspect that the Europeans will do nothing (well, other than tell the Iranians what's happening, of course).

If the Iranians are satisfied that "best efforts" are being made to effectuate the terms of the agreement, then I suspect that the Iranians will, also, do nothing.

But not for research reactors.

BTW 20% is around 23.5% of the enrichment needed for nuclear weapons.

Is Biden allowed to engage in such back channel diplomatic discussions before inauguration?

Do you think it likely that Biden will attempt to return to the nuclear deal, or one substantially similar, and call it a day? Or will he use current sanctions as leverage to get a slightly different deal?

Not if one is researching weapons, for sure. It is approximately 500% of what is needed for a nuclear power plant.

Right... Israel is the problem in the mid-east...

The 20% is also required for medical isotopes used in medical imaging. Something the US has put on the sanctions list

Oh-- so Biden will violate the Logan Act, undermine USA policy ect ect ect?

And to think we threw away the only chance we had at actually stopping Iran from getting a nuke.

And to think we threw away the only chance we had at actually stopping Iran from getting a nuke.

When was that? The deal only lasted for 10 years. In 2025, Iran is free and clear to do what it wishes.

Biden will want more than the previous agreement.
Expanded checks, as Iran has been known to cheat- obscure- destroy evidence

Transfers of technology to Hamas and others
Used to be if Hezbollah launched 20/30 rockets 1 or so was close

With new technology, (gps guided) 1 does the job

We saw that from the Iranian attacks on Saudi oil targets

Iran is closing in on Israel thru Syria/Lebanon, and Israel will on take so much

My opinion, barring an agreement on nukes/missiles/Hezbollah another war is coming in the ME

And it will be huge
