[W:79] Elon Musk — who has $260 billion — will be charging Helene victims $400 for internet service

I don't know why I have to explain this to you, but:

All he's doing is giving new customers in the hurricane zone 1 month free. Yes, they still have to cough up nearly $400 for the hardware.
I don’t know why it hast to be explained to you, but: You can’t magic a satellite connection. You need the Starlink kit. He is providing and distributing free kits but Musk can’t make Home Depot give their stock away for free.
No, existing customers don't get any aid from Starlink.
False.

Yes, as Starlink has said all along, you need to purchase the kit if you are not an existing customer. Musk has people and kits on the ground and they are now able to distribute them since Secretary Buttigieg intervened. But I can see no good deed goes unpunished by the left.
That is one way to look at it.

One could also look at it that Musk is taking advantage of a bad situation to promote his product. My take is a good "right" leaning person would give the kits away. After all Musk is a Billionaire.

(ps. my comment is coming from the stance of a former GOP no Independent. I do not speak for the left.

They’ve so far deployed 500 of these kits for distribution.

The kit probably costs Musk $100 to manufacture. 500 X 100 = $50k. Compared to his net worth, the donated amount is infinitesimal

He doesn’t decide retail prices. How much of your net worth have you donated?

if you say so. I was looking for a link to back up what you say is true.

Of course retail stores most likely would not give them away, unless Starline (Musk) would reimburse them.

How much of your net worth have you donated?
This thread isn't about me but FYI, I've donated to World Central Kitchen and helped a family member who is displaced from their home.

My financial assistance to victims has been proportional to Musk's. Do I get a high five from Musk fans?

This is one article that I found. Seems it is more of the Govt. deploying the service. Do you have a link that states what Musk / Starlink is doing?

"The Biden administration has announced it is planning to deploy dozens of ground-based Starlink devices that connect with satellites to provide internet services to remote areas. And the company has said approximately 500 Starlink kits are being deployed by private individuals and organizations to help with the recovery efforts. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has said the company is waiving costs in affected areas.

This has been proven incorrect.

Defending Nazis like Musk is a bad look.

It's a far greater proportion than Musk's donation. And that's the last personal question I will respond to. My personal donations to hurricane victims are not the thread topic.

Here ya go, straight from Starlink.

"Please note: A Starlink kit is required to access this free service. If you do not already have a Starlink kit, you will need to purchase one from starlink.com/residential or an authorized retailer such as Best Buy or Home Depot."

Whatever effort you're talking about, it's separate from Musk's fake philanthropy.

I am not defending Musk, The article is stating the Administration is deploying the network not Musk.

Care to provide a link that debunks the article I posted.

Remember when musk unlawfully interfered in the war in Ukraine TO HELP THE RUSSIANS?

I do.

When questioned about why he prevented the Ukrainians from attacking, he lied about it.

“The Starlink regions in question were not activated. SpaceX did not deactivate anything,” Musk said in a response to a thread on X about Ukraine’s claims, which were made in a book about the conflict.

Musk is an untrustworthy scumbag.

I know. I mentioned that to another poster.

I agree with you.

Actually, the Biden Administration was stealing them and trying to take credit. Per Musk’s people on the ground:

“Hey Elon, update here on site of Asheville, NC. We have powered up two large operating bases for choppers to deliver goods into hands. We’ve deployed 300+ starlinks and outpour is it has saved many lives. The big issue is FEMA is actively blocking shipments and seizing goods and services locally and locking them away to state they are their own. It’s very real and scary how much they have taken control to stop people helping. We are blocked now on the shipments of new starlinks coming in until we get an escort from the fire dept. but that may not be enough.”

And

“We need help to get word out about FEMA. We spoke with Ivanka and handed out starlinks with her yesterday but FEMA then showed up and started blocking us.”

Musk had to get on the phone with Secretary Buttigieg to intervene.

30 day free service. After you go buy the starlink kit. prices I saw range from $350 to $550.
With roadways damaged, power down in some areas and stores closed. Where would you suggest a person in the Hurricane zone go buy the starlink kit?

A pretty much worthless offer by Musk for those who do not already have starlink and no power.
after that plans run from $120/month to $1000.
More to the point....if your roof was blown off.....where do you put the sat. dish?? And, in any case, you'll need electric power (why oh why doesn't Elon offer a gasoline powered version of his satellite internet service??)

It seems like you are.

Updated The free Starlink service Elon Musk and SpaceX so graciously promised for communities devastated by Hurricane Helene in the US is not actually entirely free, according to those living in the aftermath - and the internet satellite operator's own signup page.

There is a significant caveat: You are still expected to foot the bill for the hardware.

Starlink's Twitter account declared last week, in a post with tens of millions of views, that "Starlink is now free for 30 days." The world's richest man, with a net worth of approximately $260 billion, followed up by saying, in quite the PR coup, that all Starlink terminals would now work automatically "without [the] need for payment in the areas affected by Hurricane Helene."

I think Musk is just trying to muddy the Relief response being done by the Administration.

Unless someone has a generator, the kit would do them no good. It is also noted Starlink is only offering a 30 day no fee access. After that the person would have to pay.
What was the saying a few years ago, "Never let a crisis go waste" That is what Musk is trying to do.
