[W:#690]McCarthy falls short in first vote for House speaker

The GOP have even been blaming Democrats! They claim Dems are united against them!

I kid you not . . .
That's hilarious.

Well they jettisoned, literally, their entire party platform in favor of "hate dems!!", I suppose that's the only scaffolding they have left to hold on to. It use to be Trump + hate dems, but without Trump it's just "hate dems!" swinging in the wind.

We have watched the slow devolution of the party, from someone like GHWBush who seemed to care about the nation and work hard at civil service, to a party that simply pantomimes right wing media. They have lost their backbone to the point that it's now just a quivering jelly-fish, saying whatever it has to say to generate likes/views in the right wing media sphere.

So all that's needed is six R who want the house to work & we're good.

Easier said than done.

But yes, Jefferies is the current board leader by a solid 10 pts.

And the star of their poster-boy, Trump, is fading fast . . .

So, does anyone believe any deals were made in the wee hours of the morning to select a speaker on the first vote today (Wed, Jan 4) or will we be treated to Round Two of futility?
If they have & it's McCarthy, he'll never have the respect of his caucus. They should nominate another, I don't know who & try again. Get the Capital Police to remove McCarthy's belongings from the speakers office.

Though you might get one or two persons voting the other way to make a point, you are not going to get enough Dems to elect McCarthy nor Republicans to elect Jefferies (the latter will not happen) without already negotiated rock solid deal.

McCarthy did not do his homework. A good speaker will not allow vote without knowing the outcome. McCarthy is a fool and not qualified to be speaker. Next!

It's amazing how smoothly Pelosi ran the show, in comparison.

This is really going to be a "do nothing" Congress. We though Boehner had a shyte show, but this is looking likely to be worse.

I'm not even sure what the platform is. There doesn't seem to be one. They all speak in generalities, often differing from each other.

Your posts display intense anger. Calm down, dude. Chill out. This is just theater. This isn't real life.
I'm not angry... I simply talk about things that some people don't want to deal with and can't stand it to be discussed. Some of those same people ignore the long history of things said, done, wrote about and every other kind of thing they could about black people that was damaging to black people, and resulted to damage not only black people, but the outgrowth of it damaged poor and working poor whites as well.

I truly don't care about anyone calling it racist, because they have never liked anyone to say anything about the conduct and acts and actions of white people, if it not patronizing and pandering to them.

The days of non white people stepping off the side walk to let white people walk on the sidewalk, are long over. Yet, some of these white people never let it cross their mind of the bias and bigotry rooted in racist concepts such things were, they took it as if they had a right and priviledged and specialness to have engaged such disrespectful conduct.

Some of these same old people in this forum are direct offspring's of those who did such things and many of them who are over the age of 59, directly lived in that environment with that same mentality as being common place.

Now, its not my fault nor will I make it my problem, that they can't digest reading, listening, or hearing about their racist based bias and bigotry and the history of conduct that shaped the ideology of "some" of them.

Yes, and?

Can we all be adults here and recognize that nearly every bill passed by the GOP house will be defeated in the Senate? If a miracle occurs and something that the GOP had proposed passes the senate, the POTUS will just veto the bill.

So let's just stop with the whining about not passing desired legislation being tantamount to a "non-functioning" government. This is how our republic is designed.

Oversight, investigation and impeachment are the priorities. That IS "functioning".
The definition of a working government, to the left, is when they can steamroll anything they want through, without opposition.

Is this all simply because McCarthy was not rabid enough in defending Trump's Big Lie? I keep looking online for the justification of the 19 (now 20) Republicans and finding little.

The crowd against McCarthy have many complaints, but no solutions it seems.

I watched two hours of Fox, including with Congress critters coming on, and still have no idea what it is they want. It seems they just don't want McCarthy. That's their highest priority.

Maybe so. I would prefer Jordan, Matt Gaetz, or MTG. But they can allow anyone as a speaker. Kari Lake would be good, too. Perhaps trump and them when Biden and Harris are impeached, he becomes president.

This isn't even near the realm of reality . . .

The issue in Afghanistan was started by a republican and a democrat was left to carry out the withdrawal based on a timeline created by Trump. The border is nonsensical bullshit created by the right. Gas prices are not within the control of the president. Russia illegally invaded Ukraine. China is being handled.

Stop the partisan bullshit please.
LOL! Look at you, scrambling to place blame anywhere but where it belongs. Go away with that garbage.

Off topic spamming is a thread derailment, and against forum rules.
Your one dimensional small box thinking would say something as insidious as that. There is not a thread on this entire forum that does not expound and deal with the underlying aspects that some don't have the mental acquity to even acknowledge as being underlying factors.

You and your desperations to dictate... only continues to demonstrate your own self consumed insidiousness. I've said to you repeatedly, no one forced you to read anything.

Now... move on to what you can deal with... is an option you might benefit yourself to exercise.

Your racist rants are off topic derailments, unless the thread is about racism. This thread is not, thus the reason I pointed that out.

Well, even Trump does not go far enough for the most hateful authoritarian right wing extremists. McCarthy can't be extreme enough for them.

Eventually they will realized he's the best they can do and they are wasting time. And them wasting time is a good thing.

That shows you how bad that Pelosi and the Democrats were.

Or just how stupid so many Americans are

I would go with how stupid many Americans are

MTG is a poster child on how stupid voters can be

Stupid is putting Democrats in charge, watching them hate and attack our country, and then vote for them again. I admit, many of them vote on low information, which is a cornerstone of the Democrat strategy.

The definition of a working government, to the left, is when they can steamroll anything they want through, without opposition.
What it has, is popular and political support.

You know, functioning government.

You really have fallen so far that you think functioning government is when Republicans opposing anything with a (D) without any concerns for what it actually is, or that they themselves supported it just months prior?

A lost party indeed.

Republicans can't elect a speaker, but keep telling us it's all about how bad Dems are...it's hilarious.

Where is the RNC party platform? You guys sold out your party to the right wing hate machine. Better ask Tucker and Hannity who they want elected as Speaker!

To be honest, I don't agree with the Democrats that this is bad for democracy. I think it might be a good thing for democracy in the US, we'll see.

It's looking a bit like dysfunctionality to some of us, though.

Dems were pretty much set to govern on day 1. I have little hope for this Congress governing.

The old Congress hurried to do the budget in the interim after last NOV because McCarthy informed the old Congress he didn't have a governable majority.

Ostensibly, we'd think the budget would be best reflecting the results of the election. But, it never would have gotten done. So, how can this be good? Meanwhile, severe issues like immigration reform await legislative remedy . . .

Will Americans take GOP investigations seriously after this 🤡 💩 show? At least they could agree on adjourning. DEMs must stay Jewish laser focused on DeSantos.

Meanwhile, McConnell is in his Kentucky today with President Biden, Gov. DeWine, Sen. Brown and one of my favorite DEMs, Gov. Beshear, to show Real infrastructure.
After the 1923 debacle, we had the Great Depression. After the 1856 debacle, we had a Civil War shortly after. Pick your poison.

Good post. Good points.

And make money.
True. Much of why corporations/wealthy support right wing politics is just for the twin pillars...lowering their tax burden and decreasing regulations on their corporations. They are just along for the ride. Same with evangelicals, who sold out Jesus all for going after a woman's right to an abortion. All along for the ride.

And the ride is now a clown car thanks to Trump. Trump got out of the car, but the car seems to still be driving around, honking and lights flashing.

The definition of a working government, to the left, is when they can steamroll anything they want through, without opposition.
Yes, of course. Just trying to get one to cop to that.

Many on the left either do not like to define their terms, for obvious reasons.

The condescension in all of the whining about the lack of a "functioning government" etc. is palpable.

Then I get answers like this...

Look back at the last Congress for insight into what governance means.
LOL!

No, seriously, what does a "functioning government" mean?
