(CNN) Female passenger killed after being set on fire on an NYC subway train
--
Around 7:30 a.m., a man, who police believe is about 25 to 30 years old, approached the sleeping victim on a stationary F train car and intentionally set her on fire before fleeing the scene, NYPD Det. Austin Glickman told CNN.

Man's inhumanity to man is often astounding. I'm at a loss, with this one. To incinerate a sleeping women, defies all sense of humanity.

To think I used to occasionally nap or doze, when I regularly took public transportation. I suspect many of us have. Imagine dozing one minute, and waking-up ablaze the next. And apparently, the assailant sat on a nearby bench and calmly watched his victim writher and expire. Shocking.

The NYP has video footage of the incident hosted on its website. Even while the victim is blurred-out, it still is rather graphic.

Given its graphic nature, I felt it was better to put the video footage here - in its own post - outside my OP.

For whatever technical reason, I could not place the NYT link behind a spoiler tag.

Beware of the graphic nature of the video, should you chose to invoke the NYP link below, and view the video in the article.

****ing New Yorkers - some walking by, others just sitting and watching. 😡
I remember Kitty Genovese.

The guy calmly sitting nearby and watching, was the murderer.

I'd like to think if I were there, I would have tried to douse her flames with my coat.

But none of us know exactly how we'll respond to such unique traumatic events, so I'll not criticize.

I remember Kitty Genovese.

Ah, good memory. I remember the incident, but had forgotten the name.

Then not too long afterwards came "Son of Sam".

I have about 200 acres of woods behind my house. Bring him her and I can deal with him and bury the body, or just let the animals have him.

Good God. The evil.

That just absolutely snapped my Christmas mood.

I first came upon the story via the NYP video (in my post #2). Yow!

That video was so graphic, I found a non-video source to use in my OP, putting the article with the video in the subsequent post.

I didn't want to see it, but it popped up in my Twitter feed.

Oh Jesus Christ, and I mean that prayerfully, not as a swear.

I mean...my God....how, just how.

Its a shame we have to be constantly on our guard.

I don't do public transport daily, anymore. And when I do ride the train or el, I haven't felt the need to doze. But if I do, I think I'll now pass on the urge.
You will not find me in a restaurant where I don't have my back against the wall with clear view of those coming in and out.

Its a shame that for so many killing and death has been desensitized. Life has no value for them.

Bingo! To far too many life has no value. They thinking nothing of taking another life.

I do the same, though not necessarily or fully out of safety. I just prefer to watch the action.

Some desensitization of sorts, seems to be nearly unavoidable in large dense urban environments. In the city I'm approached by a plethora of beggars and homeless, many who appear to be legitimately unfortunate. But you can't help everyone, and you can't save the world, so you walk-on by. It still tugs at the heart, but what can you do?

Actually - when I was still working & doing business in the city, I carried Catholic Charity business cards. I'd occasionally give them out to those that approached me that appeared otherwise amenable. I never gave, nor will ever give, cash.

Interesting post. I don’t live in a large city (thankfully). I would think it is difficult to walk on by, but you are correct there is only so much an individual can do to help. I always push for those who have the time to volunteer in whatever capacity they can. It may not change the world, but it at least is a start to helping those less fortunate

NYP Article:

I don't need to watch. A few years ago, I awoke from an induced coma in the Brooks Army Medical Center's burn unit. I know how fire burns. Whatever the perpetrator's circumstances, there is no circle of hell too severe to mete out justice for this poor woman and her family.

Would you oppose the death penalty for this murderer? Do you think Biden would commute/pardon him?
