The whole reason why the NFL had the players on the field in the first place is that the military paid them to do it a decade ago in order to help with recruitment.

The right to protest is one of the hallmarks of American Democracy.

That said, to say the athletes are protesting against the National Anthem (or America, or the flag) is like saying Rosa Parks was protesting against the bus.

The NFL will be fine without you. Ratings will be fine, with or without you all. Last year alone, 33 of the top 50 rated shows were NFL games. Ratings have been declining overall slowly, but steadily for years, because of factors beyond the control of the league and the networks (i.e. cord cutting, etc.). Youth football participation rates (from pee-wee level all the way up to high school) have also been on the decline for years. The game will have to change, to survive as the most popular sport, long-term.
