[W: #135] The 1960's --- Hope, Prosperity, and then COUNTER CULTURE

Not to forget The Beatles, we have them coming in with their version of TWIST AND SHOUT. This would be number 40 for the year 1964:

In 1964 -- Johnny Rivers would have a hit with MEMPHIS, (grabbing the number 41 spot for that year) and Rivers would appear on American Bandstand:

IT'S IN HIS KISS was first released as a single in 1963 by Merry Clayton which didn't hit the charts. The song was made a hit a year later when recorded by Betty Everett, hitting No. 1 on Cashbox Magazine R&B charts in 1964.
The song was rejected by The Shirelles, the premier girl group of the early 1960's. It's a great Cha Cha dance ----

BITS AND PIECES is a song by The Dave Clark Five. The single hit did very well in the UK, the US, in Australia, Canada Ireland, the Netherlands. and Germany. Lead vocals are sung by Mike Smith. The song is in antiphonal style, with a solo line and the group responding. The drums are prominent, with some of the song's unique percussion supplied by builder’s scaffold boards, which two of the band members stamped on, not always perfectly in time to the music.

MY BOY LOLLIPOP was a through back to a 1956 song sung by Barbie Gaye. Millie Small would rerecord this song and make it a 1964 hit.

Major Lance would have a hit that would take spot 47 in 1964. The song title was UM, UM, UM, UM, UM, UM on OKEH Records. The Single was released in December of that year.

"THE LITTLE OLD LADY FROM PASADENA is a song recorded by Jan and Dean. The song would be performed live by The Beach Boys and would be included ion their No. 1 album Beach Boys Concert.
The origins of "The Little Old Lady (from Pasadena)" stem from a very popular Dodge TV ad campaign in southern California that launched in early 1964. The commercials showed the white-haired elderly lady speeding down the street driving a modified Dodge. She would stop and say "Put a Dodge in your garage, Honey!". An 1949 episode of the Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy radio show jokingly mentioned a joke used horse being owned by an old lady in Pasadena. apparently this was a well-known running gag by this time. And again that same year 1949 on the radio show MY FAVORITE HUSBAND, Lucille Ball's character Liz Cooper jokes about getting a used sleigh "only pulled by an elderly reindeer from Pasadena." By 1958, Alfred Hitchcock used the phrase “a little old lady from Pasadena” in an introduction for his TV series Alfred Hitchcock Presents. According to the story, used car salesmen would tell prospective buyers that the previous owner of a vehicle was "a little old lady from Pasadena who only drove it to church on Sundays," And so the inspiration for the song was there... Jan and Dean look rather lost on the stage but the audience loved to see both them and apparently themselves on camera!

"DON'T LET THE SUN CATCH YOU CRYING is a song written by the members of the British group Gerry and the Pacemakers which became an international hit and remains one of their best-known singles. Originally recorded first by Louise Cordet that same year on DECCA Records. The Pacemakers decided to record the song themselves when Cordet's version failed to chart. Here is Her version: And here's the hit sung by the Pacemakers:

At number 50 for the year 1964 we have A SUMMER SONG by the British duo Chad and Jeremy. Ringo Starr, critiquing this song, suggested that it wouldn't make it in the US; however, due their Hit YESTERDAYS GONE, the track afforded the duo their career record, reaching #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in October of 1964, and went to #2 for six weeks on the Adult Contemporary chart that same year:

And so to close out our year of 1964, I've selected the song LEADER OF THE PACK (number 69 for the year 1964) sung by the Shangri-Las. In the United Kingdom, this single was refused airplay by the BBC, most likely the result of its death theme and clashes between Mod's & Rockers at the time. I just can't put it down... down...

WOOLY BULLY is the number one song for the year 1965. It was recorded by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs in 1964. It was picked up in 1965 by MGM Records. WOOLY BULLY was the band's first and biggest hit song --- becomlng a worldwide success, selling three million copies and reaching No. 2 on the American Hot 100 chart on June 5–12, 1965. The Beach Boys' HELP ME RHONDA and The Supremes' BACK IN MY ARMS AGAIN blocked WOOLY BULLY from the number one spot.

WOOLY BULLY would be the first American record to sell a million copies during the British Invasion and was influenced by the British rock sound It stayed in the Hot 100 for 18 weeks, the longest time for any song in 1965. It was really different...

I CAN'T HELP MYSELF was recorded by the Four Tops for MOTOWN Records, and became one of the most well-known Motown recordings from the 1960s and among the decade's biggest hits. The single topped Billboard's R&B chart 9 weeks and also peaking at No.1 on the Hot 100 for two non-consecutive weeks, from June 12 to June 19 and June 26 to July 3 ----- the year was 1965.

I CAN'T GET NO SATISFACTION was written by Keith Richards in his sleep and recorded a rough version of the riff on a cassette player. The Rolling Stones first recorded the track on May 10th, 1965 at CHESS Studios in Chicago. The single hit the charts in June of 1965. The group re-recorded it later at RCA Studios in Hollywood, in monaural, as with most of their early records. I CAN'T GET NO SATISFACTION is one of the world's most popular songs and the Rolling Stones' first number 1 hit.

YOU WERE ON MY MIND was originally recorded by Ian and Sylvia but better known versions were recorded by We Five and Crispian St. Peters, with slightly altered lyrics and melody. It would reach No. 3 on the Billboard Holt 100 chart in September 1965 and topped the Easy listening chart for five weeks. In Canada, this version reached No. 4. The performance by We Five begins with a gradual buildup in intensity, starting off somewhat flowing and gentle, increasing in intensity. The dominant voice is lead singer Beverly Bivens.

The Righteous Brothers would have a great hit with YOU'VE LOST THAT LOVIN' FEELIN'. This version is cited by some music critics as the ultimate expression and illustration of Spector's Wall of Sound technique. The record reached number one in early February 1965 in both the United States and the United Kingdom. A really great and adult song: The guy with the spotlight seems to have had some problems...

In late 1964 Hatch made his first visit to New York City, spending three days there in search of material from music publishers for the artists he was producing. Hatch stated, "I was staying at a hotel on Central Park and I wandered down to Broadway and to Times Square and, naively, I thought I was downtown." And the idea for a song was born... Regardless of the Christmas season being the worst time to break a new hit, DOWNTOWN shot up to No. 41 in its second week on the Hot 100 chart. Ascending, DOWNTOWN leapt to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 by January 23, 1965. The song had been recorded on 16 October 1964 at the Pye Studios. DOWNTOWN connects with young record buyers by making a giant orchestra sound like a rock band. The orchestra contained eight violinists, two viola players and two cellists, four trumpeters and four trombonists, five woodwind players with flutes and oboes, percussionists, a bass player and a pianist. Also playing on the session were guitarists Vic Flick, Jimmy Page and Big Jim Sullivan, as well as drummer Ronnie Verrell, while the Breakaways provided the vocal accompaniment. Bobby Graham was also credited as being the drummer on the session. Petulant Clark would become the 1st United Kingdom female artist to hit number 1 during the rock era and only the second in the annals of US charted music. That spot goes to Vera Lynn who had a number 1 hit in 1952 with AUF WIEDERSEH'N SWEETHEART.
The song begins with a now very recognizable piano into...

HELP! is a movie, album and song title of the same name. It was released on August 6, 1965 by PARLOPHONE Records. HELP! was written primarily by Lennon ---- originally conceived at a slower tempo. But it was sped up to make it more commercially successful. It was composed out of need for a title song. John Lennon remained extremely proud of HELP! even once naming it his favorite song of the Beatles that he wrote. So at number 6 for 1965 we need some ____:

This is a bit of an EXTRA and is dated from 1960, so it's a little earlier. BUT it was hot in it's day and very cool. It's called THE MADISON ----- can you do it?
Everybody once did it. Kookie from 77 Sunset Strip, Mayard G Krebs from Dobie Gillis, Pat Boone, and Annette Funicello from the surf movies:

On April 6, 1965, CRYING IN THE CHAPEL was issued on an RCA Record "Gold Standard Series." It became Elvis' first million seller since RETURN TO SENDER in 1962 and his greatest chart success spanning 6 years.\

The recorded version of MY GIRL was the first Temptations single to feature David Ruffin. The Temptations also recorded German and Italian-language versions, "Mein Girl" and "Solamente Lei". MY GIRL climbed to the top of the U.S. pop charts on March 6, 1965, after its 1964 Christmas time release, becoming The Temptations' first number 1 hit. This made MY GIRL #10 for 1965.
